What to do and see in Cartagena, Bolivar Department: The Best Shopping

February 26, 2022 Brain Ambrose

Cartagena, a gorgeous fishing village on Colombia's Caribbean coast, has excellent beaches, a historic old town (that's entirely walkable) and beautiful colonial architecture. It's also one of the safest places in the country, so it's no wonder it's a popular port of call for cruise ships. Need a break from exploring the cobblestone streets? Stop at an outdoor cafe for excellent pastries and people-watching.

Coffee And

After nearly a week in Cartagena I’d been a bit surprised not to see more specialty coffee places so I was happy to spot this store by chance on my final morning, just around the corner from the Hotel Santa Theresa. Even happier when I discovered that Luis the owner speaks perfect English and is really passionate and knowledgeable about their coffee and chocolates. They have some great coffee and interesting variations which he can recommend. I was pleasantly surprised to try a roast with the skin remaining which gives the coffee a fruity, malty sort of flavour, best brewed in a French press - a nice change from my usual espresso or flat white.

Both Marina and Carlos were extremely helpful when my husband and I purchased a beautiful white gold and emerald pendant while staying in Cartegena. We were introduced to the shop and owner by our local guide, who recommended their range and honesty. We were not disappointed and when we needed documentation for claiming tax back at the airport before our flight home to the UK, Carlos could not have been more helpful. Would thoroughly recommend.

My fiancé and i stopped in there while on our cruise. The store is bright, open, and has a beautiful beautiful selection of personally designed jewelry. We had no pressure at all from the staff, and selected a ring for purchase. We were pressed for time, but they were able to have the ring sized within the hour. While we waited, Lee recommended a restaurant just up the road for some lunch. The ring was ready just as promised and we were ecstatic. Sadly after we got home, my fiancé damaged the stone of the ring. When i reached out to Lee, he went above and beyond to work with me to have the ring repaired. I cannot praise him enough for the work he did. Mr. Emerald is a reputable and honest business, not only during purchase, but beyond as well. I can not recommend them enough and highly recommend you keep them at the top of your list if in the market for jewelry or are in Cartagena.
