Punta Delle Colonne

I didn't go ashore as I accessed Punta Delle Colonne from a small boat. Apparently some of the columns collapsed recently. Not a big deal - the intriguing stuff is underwater. I haven't seen anything like it before the numerous stone reef rising to the surface from about 15 to 20 metres look exactly like ancient fortifications I have seen on land. You can even make out the block work and it is all squared off. What do they say about no straight lines in nature (I know crystals but they do say that). These are all straight lines. natural or an ancient underwater city? There is a theory that Atlantis was between Italy and north Africa - this sort of fits that. One for others to decide.
WARNING: The currents can be strong here - very strong once the afternoon sea breeze comes in so not for beginners

Capo Sandalo

Reviewed By CareySJC - London

The main reason to visit Capo Sandalo was to try to see the Eleonora's falcons which I am pleased to say we saw together with good numbers of Sylvia warblers.
It is a short 11km drive from the main/only town on Isola di San Pietro. Just before reaching Capo Sandalo you pass by the wonderful spiaggia di Cala Fico with its steep lava rocks and more wonderful Falcons (worth stopping off here too there is a track that runs down to a very rocky beach, beware it becomes very rough at the bottom and there is a small area for 5 or 6 cars max).
We arrived at Capo Sandalo and had the whole place to ourselves, you really felt you were at the edge of the world, with the only other sound being from the birdlife. For that reason, it felt very special.
There is a large lighthouse above the rocks with steep paths down to the sea and also to a viewpoint with wonderful views out to sea.
There are good information boards (also in English) about the wildlife in the area and there is a large (free) car park.
This is a place to visit if you want big views or are interested in flora, fauna and wildlife. Make sure you take water/food etc, there is nothing available once you leave Carloforte.
If you are interested in birdlife, check-out the lagoons as you leave Carloforte for waders and also stop at Cala Fico just before Capo Sandalo for more sightings of the Eleonora's falcons, really scan the cliffs for sighting.

The beach is beautiful and I would agree with many of the reviewers about the noise of the construction. The shack on the beach (you pass it to walk from your car/bike) and it serves the most fantastic food. I can't recommend the journey enough to ignore the noise and eyesore and feast on the pasta and fish. Absolutley delicious and a real jem.

Punta Nera is divided in two zones, the bigger one is more recommended for children and families, the smaller is wilder, the water is very clear and if you arrive early it's nice to recover among the rocks.

You could hardly believe that in a such a small town, somewhere into a small island around Sardegna you might find such a nice monument. It has great arrangement inside and the feeling of relaxation is real. Is also functional as a church, so, anyone who might attend to the mess is welcome.
