Gruyeres Castle

Gruyères Castle has stood proudly atop a verdant hill in the heart of Switzerland since the 13th century. Surrounded by the magnificent panorama of the Alpine foothills, the medieval fortress houses prestigious collections that bear witness to its long and rich history. The treasures to be found within its walls include the capes of the Order of the Golden Fleece and the intricate stained-glass windows dating from the Middle Ages; the frescoes commissioned by the bailiffs under the Ancien Régime; paintings by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and the troubadour decorations of the Salle des Chevaliers, created at Gruyères in the 19th century by a colony of passionate artists. From its ramparts to its French-style gardens, from the guard room to its romantic salons, Gruyères Castle takes you on an adventure through eight centuries of art, history and legends.

We loved the small town and the walk from the train stop to the castle. It has an authentic vibe to it and the surroundings are even better than the castle. If you came by train, the bus up the castle and back will be free for you.

Papiliorama

More than 1'000 butterflies flying freely in a hughe tropical garden. Many more things like: Nocturama (nocturnal animals), Jungle Trek (a replica of the tropical forest in Belize), Wild Seeland (native biodiversity), Bug Bigtop (small animals), Petting zoo and many nature playgrounds.

Really interesting place to take the kids for a half day excursion. The ticket gets you entry into the Papiliorama - butterfly haven, the Nocturama where you can see lots of bats and other nocturnal animals, the Jungle Trek with exotic animals (mainly birds) as well as the outdoor petting zoo with donkeys, goats and pigs, an observatory deck and a nice playground. We arrived at 10am and stayed 2 hours which gave us enough time to do it all, working around the feedings (last pic). Admission ticket - 19chf per adult, 9.50chf from 4 to 15 years old, free for children under 3. Parking - 4chf which you pay at the entrance with your admission ticket. Most is easily accessible with a pram. There is a self-serve restaurant or you can bring a picnic.

It is having a direct impact on us all at Maison Cailler, as the museum has to exceptionally close its doors to the public until further notice. We can only regret this situation, but we are convinced that it is only by acting together that we will be able to overcome the problem. We are already looking forward to seeing you again; we will miss you. Take good care of yourself and see you soon ! Your Maison Cailler team
