Had mototrip from Quito to Canoa and spent Saturday with Surf & yoga. Easy communication with Betty, smooth start and first success of Surfing after couple of hours, then opened new horizonts during the yoga lessons in the evening. Amazing day, especially thanks to magical ambient of Canoa and personal care of Betty.

Rio Muchacho Organic Farm

Rio Muchacho Organic Farm and Eco-lodge is located 10km north of the popular beach town of Canoa. We offer a unique and ecologically friendly haven for guests to stay, relax, and explore. Our bungalow-style accommodation was constructed entirely from local materials, and we try to prepare all our meals using fresh fruit and vegetables harvested from our own grounds. Unwind in our yoga & meditation garden, spend time investigating the farm's abundance of plants and animal life, watch your kids climb or swing in our playground, or choose from an array of guided tours. Experience coastal Ecuador in a tranquil setting, far removed from the typical tourism tracks and ideal for families or authentic nature seekers. Harvest fresh organic ingredients and prepare a traditional Tonga lunch. Horseback ride to a monkey forest, then make your own chocolate. We also offer volunteering opportunities and intensive course programs about permaculture and sustainable living.

This place is truly a unique Ecuador experience. For those keen on environmental and permaculture education, I can think of no better place in all of Ecuador. Rio Muchacho definitely experienced some earthquake damage from the April 2016 earthquake, however they are rebuilding and still need some assistance. When we visited in March 2017, all operations were still going strong and we had a wonderful time during our short 2 night visit. We toured the farm facilities and hiked the properties and made chocolate. This is truly a unique experience, and is the perfect option for groups and those interested in local environmental issues and permaculture. We will be back!

Finca Caracol

At heart we are a small family farm with big dreams. From our small dairy farm we are now making home-made artisanal ice cream that we sell in town. Tours of the farm and/or the surrounding areas are available with Edgar as your guide. He is bilingual and has been guiding local tours since 2008. We also offer a volunteer opportunity at the farm, in the rural community of Rio Muchacho. Volunteers pay only $25 a week, working just half a day on the farm, practicing their spanish, learning about local agricultural practice and culture, and feeling part of our small family.

We enjoyed an interesting and informative 1/2 hr ish walk to the farm, with Rachel from Finca Caracol and Marcos from Finca Esperanza where we were warmly greeted by by the rest of the family (Spanish and English is spoken at both these farms). We opted out of the horseback ride to the farm.
For those who enjoy off the beaten path experiences...this is for you.
We had a hands on experience including tasting organic cacao right from the tree, stirring the pot while the fermented beans were toasted over an open fire, pealing the toasted beans, grinding the beans and finally tasting the cacao beans after they were made into a chocolate sauce and poured over freshly picked sliced bananas. A wonderful experience, there were only 2 of us so it was a private tour.
Wear running shoes or boots if it is raining. Take drinking water. Not for those with difficulty walking on uneven terrain and up/down hills.

I don't believe this place is always open but we did rent boards from here while staying in Canoa. I also believe they offer surf lessons, although we did not take any lessons. The fellow (who we think was the owner) was very helpful, gave us some good Surfing tips and threw in a couple of surf shirts for our sons to borrow (surf shirts are a must or you will get both sunburned and get a rash on your belly. We rented the boards in the late afternoon and were able to keep them until the following afternoon and were only charged for the one day.
