What to do and see in Cannes, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur: The Best Free Things to do

December 16, 2021 Carley Gatson

Galas, regattas, the Film Festival and an outrageously attractive and affluent set characterize Cannes. Vast yachts obscure the view and the town lives up to its motto, "Life is a festival." People-watching is the activity that brings most visitors to Cannes, and hotel-lined La Croisette provides a fine promenade. First popularized by Coco Chanel, Cannes beaches are a huge draw. Get expensive seaside food and drinks service on hotel sand or opt for the free public beaches, Plages du Midi and de la Boca.

Fantastic area for a leisurely stroll on a summer day. Quite a few cafes and restaurants along the way, which made it easy to stop and refuel. The old cobble-stoned winding streets take you back to the days gone by - the streets have been there for hundreds of years! Oh and don't forget to stop over at La Gelateria to try one of their amazing flavours. Highly recommended.

Villa Rothschild - Mediatheque Noailles

Reviewed By YairBarZohar - Qiryat Ata, Israel

Willa Rothschild. This place has something to do with our history. The Baroness, daughter of Rothschild, who was the mother of Baron Rothschild, the "well known", was widowed by her husband. She had a dream to build a villa in Cannes in 1881. To do so, she purchased land that spanned more than 30,000 square feet and already included five villas. She hired two of them to accommodate her servants and destroyed the others. Then, she asked architect Charles Baron to build a villa for her, where she could host the guests who came to the various events she regularly organized. Later, this villa went through several hands. Among other things, during World War II, the villa was confiscated by the Nazi forces, who settled their headquarters there. In 1947, the villa was purchased by the Municipality of Cannes and became the municipal library. Around the impressive villa stands an equally impressive garden, which includes a number of tall trees and exotic vegetation. Admission is free. Opening hours: Tuesdays to Saturdays from 9:30 to 18:00. How long should you visit? About half an hour. Address: 1 Avenue Jean de Noailles.
