What to do and see in Camarillo, United States: The Best Places and Tips

January 12, 2018 Esmeralda Fenner

Camarillo (/ˌkæməˈriːoʊ/ KAM-ə-REE-oh) is a city in Ventura County in the U.S. state of California. The population was 65,201 at the 2010 census, up from 57,084 at the 2000 census. The Ventura Freeway (U.S. Route 101) is the city's primary thoroughfare. Camarillo is named for Adolfo and Juan Camarillo, two of the few Californios (pre-1848 California natives of Hispanic ancestry) to preserve the city's heritage after the arrival of Anglo settlers. The railroad coast route came through in 1898 and built a station here. Adolfo Camarillo eventually employed 700 workers growing mainly lima beans. Walnuts and citrus were also grown on the ranch. Adolfo bred Camarillo White Horses in the 1920s through the 1960s and was well known for riding them, dressed in colorful Spanish attire, in parades such as the Fiesta of Santa Barbara.

The Camarillo Public Library is a destination all it's own. It is a beautiful building with children's library in a pirate ship. There is lots to do as there are computers, a café, and a bookstore in addition to the many books (paperback, hardback, e-reader) as well as DVDs and videos available for checkout.

I’ve been here many times and it is always lively and busy - for a good reason. The beers are creative, delicious and reasonably priced. The limited food menu of gourmet pizza and soft pretzels and mustard is outstanding. It’s like a neighborhood beer hall! You have to try it out!

WWII Aviation Museum

We loved the WWII airplanes and the fact that they all fly. You can make reservations for a ride in your favorite plane. The docents are knowledgable and many of them have flown in the aircrafts. It's an unknown gem. Thanks to TripAdvisor, I found it! It really is a must see if you like aircraft museums. We will return next year for the annual Airshow in August.

Commemorative Air Force Southern California Wing Museum

Reviewed By Global-track - Southern California

A really good team has been assembled at the Commemorative Air Force facility at the Camarillo Airport. The static displays are interesting, and the aircraft have been restored to a very high level. There's always someone available to answer questions and discuss the background of various displays. What stands out, though, is how the CAF supports the local community and veterans with special events and presentations. They really care about the legacy and memory of those who have served, and in doing so, they're creating an legacy of their own. Great job!

Who would have guessed it but for 10 years this family winery has blended their own wines from several CA locations and the value proposition price/quality is truly a deal. We joined their wine club and enjoyed every wine (reds) in the tasting.Thank you for taking the time to write a review for Cantara Cellars. We appreciate your response. Warm Regards, Chris Brown

My women's church fellowship took a field trip to the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology. Who knew this amazing place was tucked away in Camarillo. I had vaguely heard of it and wasn't real excited about a tour on birds and I did not know what it entailed. WOW, I was quickly impressed! This is an unbelievable, world renowned Foundation. Our tour guide, Collections Manager, Rene' Corado himself has a very interesting life story of how he came to work at the Foundation. The Western Foundation tour is a must to see in person and have a guided tour.

Pleasant Valley Historical Society Museum & Botanical Gardens

This is a small museum used as an educational support for local schools. Exhibits illustrate pioneer days and feature Chumash Indian artifacts, everyday objects from settlers and farmers through the ages, vintage photographs, and maps. Good history of land grants, railroads, and early Ranchos. The botanical garden is a lovely site featuring native plants, a dry creek bed of river stones, benches, and a large gazebo. Docents are available for tours on Sa and Su from 12-4. There is a small research library on site.
Admission is free. I recommend this museum for those w/ young kids or those seeking local historical facts. It is a good stop for a road trip.

Camarillo Grove Park

Reviewed By Ridsbabe - Camarillo, CA

We recently got a small dog and heard about this park from friends. We took our baby there last weekend. The fenced in area we were hoping to find was a dirt area next to the open park. It was dark, had piles of leaves all over plus a sign that said "there could be rattlesnakes in this area" on the door. Um, no thanks. There wasn't even any GRASS!!! We saw a coyote walking just on the other side of the fence. We were outta' there in a big hurry. Maybe if your dogs are good off-leash the rest of the park may be fine, but we won't be back.
