Cabo Girao

We took the yellow tourist bus from Camara de Lobos where it was sunny. As we drove up the mountain it got more and more cloudy. At the top we could not see a thing but had to wait 40 minutes for the next bus. There is a small cafe and a rather tacky gift shop but nothing else. No doubt the glass walkway would be spectacular on a clear day but the weather let us down.

Valley of the Nuns

The "Nuns Valley" is a small village situated in the crater of an extinct volcano, which has kept its 16th-century Santa Clara Convent where the nuns used to hide from pirates who were attacking Funchal.

Amazing scenary high up in the centre of Madeira, lookin down into the valley from the high view point is quite spectacular with villages so far below. Unfortunately the day I went I was just able to take some photographs before the mist and rain rolled in. There are several cafes in all the tourist stops selling chestnut based products as there are a lot of trees in the area. The mountain roads are quite interesting and the views exceptional.

This levada is larger than the standard ones, and the path alongside is very safe. There are some good views and a long tunnel to walk through if you wish, about 15 minutes from the starting point.

Why drive when you can take the little Green Train up to the top of Cabo Girao? The driver was very informative and the trip, although bumpy is very worthwhile - we thoroughly recommend this trip.

Barbeito Madeira

Vinhos Barbeito entered the wine business in 1946, during a particularly dark time for Madeira. During World War II, production and sales had ground to a virtual halt. As a result, far more companies were leaving the business than were joining. But Mario Barbeito had faith in the future. He also believed that the value of great Madeira could only go up as it became older and production of young vintages declined. But while Barbeito saw those vintage wines as a nest egg for the future, he was content to let the wines age. He wisely built the business in the early years around more modest Madeiras. It was left to his daughter Manuela - when she gradually took over the business from him in the 1970s to continue his work. In the mid 1990s, Manuela Barbeito began to turn over the reins of the company to her son Ricardo Freitas. He not only brought a deep respect for Madeira's classical roots, but also brought new energy and new ideas to the company. One of these ideas was to restore the role that Madeira once had as a companion of food. Ricardo is continuing his grandfather's and mother's legacy of making wines and preserving them for future generations. But he is also creating his own legacy: a series of Madeiras he calls his "Signature" wines. These handcrafted wines combine the best elements of Madeira's classical tradition with Ricardo's own quest for purity and vineyard and varietal expression. Made in tiny lots, their astonishingly graceful style has prompted British wine critic Jancis Robinson to call Barbeito the "Lafite of Madeira".

Although a seasoned off-roader myself this half-day Safari was much more relaxing and rewarding when not driving. Also, having Vitor as driver and guide was a real bonus - he was interesting and informed as well as being a genuine nice guy. He picked us up at the hotel promptly at 9.30 and we set off to the west of the island to begin our half-day safari.
The difference between this and other tours that we had been on was that we were able to input into the itinery - places that we would like to see - rather than simply being chauffeured around the island.
At various spots we were able to sample local wines and and on one occasion we were able to watch a local drink called 'Poncho'? being prepared in various forms. I took the one that was more like a rather strong fruit drink while my wife took another kind that almost blew her head off!
All in all this was an excellent day and many thanks to Vitor Hugo for making it so interesting.
We would certainly like to go on another Jeep Safari with MadeirabyJeep when we revisit the Island.
