1. Easiest entrance is via the Kelly Creek ranger station and walk along the coastal path up to Punta Cahuita. It’s possible to carry on and walk around the peninsula to Peurto Vargas ranger station or, you could enter via here. 2. If your aim is to see wildlife then take a guide. Yes, you can walk though on your own but you won’t spot much and like many people we saw, you’ll just walk past many animals and reptiles, so don’t skimp on hiring a guide. Avoid going in a large group of more than 4 people if you can as you’ll see and hear much more. We had a guide through Cahuita Tours (+506 2755-0000), and would recommend them. 3. Shorts and T shirt are fine. Trainers or even better trainer sandals are good but you could even wear flip flops. Walking shoes are not necessary as the paths are good. However, if you want to go swimming then I recommend you take beach shoes because the sand gives way to broken shell and coral and unless you have soles like an elephant, you’ll find it very uncomfortable to walk over! This is one thing we weren’t told and when we tried to go for a swim off the beach near Punta Cahuita ( which is much quieter than Playa Blanca that gets very busy), we couldn’t do it due to the sharp broken coral, which kind of spoiled our visit a bit! 4. If you walk slowly and take time to look you will see quite a bit. Please don’t do what we saw some idiots doing and run along the path! It isn’t a running track and this just frightens the wildlife away.

Tour starts at 11:00 am. Patricia, the guide is intelligent, knows the flora and fauna around the area. Anyone can tell that she loves her job, the wildlife and the plants. She eagerly plays a question and answer game about the plants at the beginning of her tour, she is always trying to impart knowlege to her customers in a fun way. It is a great way to see the wildlife up close, the customers are not allowed to touch any of the animals, as the rescue center is always trying to rehab the wildlife to go back to the jungle. But, you are allowed very close to the animals to watch them. Patricia says that the government has laws against the possession of wildlife. When the government finds someone who has possession of a wild animal, the government comes in and confiscates the wild animals from the people that have them in their possession or in their homes. But the government doesn't provide any money to help feed and take care of the wild animals and birds. Patricia has a heart for people, animals and beautiful plants. Go See the Sanctuary!!

Two types of tours to see sloths and learn about their diminishing rainforest habitat. Sorry, no direct contact with sloths, for their well-being and yours. "Buttercup Tour" requires no advance reservation; just arrive about 20 minutes before the top of the hour (8AM–2PM) to register. Duration about 2 hours. "Insider's Tour" is given twice daily and requires advance booking. This tour includes everything in the Buttercup Tour plus "behind-the-scenes" visits to the NICU, Slothpital, climbing area and more. Admission/donations collected directly support the sloths – their rescue, rehabilitation, wellness, research, housing and enrichments. Thank you for supporting the sloths with your tour!

Myself and my wife did the insiders tour - an amazing day and well worth the money! The tour included a tour around inclosures on both 2 and 3 fingered sloths with a great informative tour guide, visit buttercup the original sloth and a boat ride to see any other local wildlife- all of which is included in the buttercup tour. The best parts were the insider elements of the tour - visiting the "slothopital" and then spending an hour in a room with about a dozen baby sloths! Instead of cages, the babies are in open boxes, free to move around and even grab out to you! This is a great time to take loads of photos and videos as well as learning more in depth details of the animals. There were just 4 of us on the tour, with one tour guide. Was the highlight of our holiday to Costa rica!
