Reviewed By Pensionado - Castricum, The Netherlands

This museum has a very interesting archaeological section with finds from all periods showing that the region around Cádiz was inhabited from Neolithic times on, making Cádiz the oldest, permanently inhabited city of Europe. Especially the unique Phoenician finds are worth seeing including two marble anthropoid sarcophaguses. On the first floor is the fine art collection with a room dedicated to the Spanish painter Zurbarán and another to Murillo. For everybody interested in ancient culture and art, this museum should not be missed.

This park is full of trees from around the world. There are fountains throughout the park making it a beautifully cool place to walk when the sun is hot. There is a cafe, childrens play area and lots of benches to watch the world go by. There is also an artificial water cascade which has steps to the top where you have a great view out to sea. Tranquil spot for a bit of contemplation...or a coffee and cake.

We stumbled across these markets by accident and so glad we did. More than 60 individual markets selling fresh fruit & vegetables, fish & seafood galore, olives, cheeses, hams, preserved meats, fresh meats and clothes on the outside. It was a hive of activity and a real treat to purchase fresh produce direct from the makers. We bought preserved tuna (aka ‘Ham of the Sea’) several varieties of olives and fruit. Be aware that it’s cash only.

My husband and I both found this site fascinating. We showed up at the box office around 11:30 and got free tickets for the one o’clock tour. Our guide spoke both Spanish and English and after the introductory film (subtitled in English) we were free to walk around the clearly described remains of Phoenician homes and streets. Our guide asked if we had any questions and spent a good half hour explaining things to us. She was very knowledgeable and we felt lucky to have her to ourselves. If you’re interested in history this is definitely worth seeking out.

Castillo de Santa Catalina

Reviewed By ayAroundTheWorld

Walking along the seafront is one of the highlights of my trip to Cadiz. The view is just so beautiful. From the Cathedral to Playa de la Caleta, then to Castillo de Santa Catalina, it's a leisurely walk, with a lot of sea birds flying around and stray cats lying on the rocks in the sun. The star shaped defense fortress is on a promontory. It is now a cultural centre with space for exhibitions (free entry). At the time of visit, there were several exhibitions, including one on modern art by a local artist, another on the great explosion in Cadiz in 1947. There was also some location filming taking place. Inside the castle, the small old chapel still remains. Don't miss this lovely walk.
