October 6, 2021 Darleen Reid

As a well-known destination for both spring breakers and A-list travelers in need of a getaway, Cabo San Lucas has definite vacation cred. The beaches here range in temperament, from the serene waters of the Sea of Cortez and Playa del Amor to the kickin’ waves of Zippers, a surfing paradise. If you care to romp with locals, head to the coves and rock formations of the Cannery beaches. Kids will have a blast communing with the local animals by swimming with dolphins or taking a camel ride through the Desert Park Natural Reserve.

Had a wonderful hour taxi ride trip, great guide who told us the history of Lovers Beach and Divorce Beach, showed us the sea lions and made sure we saw Pedro the sea lion on the ride back!

Socorro Island

Volcanic in origin, these islands serve as an oasis amid the Sea of Cortez, 250 miles off the Baja Peninsula coast. The raw lava flows and active volcanoes in these islands resemble the lost world of "Jurassic Park," which seems fitting as these outpost islands, including Roca Partida, beckon not just to giant mantas, but to a host of big animals. The manta behaviour here is unique in the world. The 12-to-16-foot giant mantas of Socorro seek out intimate interactions with divers. Dolphins, whale sharks, humpback whales, silky sharks, hammerhead sharks, tiger sharks and more can also be found here, depending on the time of year. Socorro is accessed by liveaboard dive boats, and promises to be the trip of a lifetime.

We wanted a trip with lots of sharks and guaranteed Mantas. We chose to go with Equator diving based near Manchester on the live aboard Valentina. The journey there was long to say the least from Manchester to Heathrow onto Dallas Fort Worth then to San Jose del Cabo. Boarded Valentina then a 36 hour sail out to San Benedicto one of three islands we dived out of the four in the Revillagigedos Archipelago. The diving did not disappoint with clear warm seas and an abundance of life including Whitetip reef sharks, Hammerheads, Silkies and the Mantas we wanted to see. We stayed for 2 days diving then sailed overnight to Socorro, again the diving was excellent Mantas, Galapagos sharks whitetips. Whilst there you have to pay a visit to the naval base for your passports to be checked. We then sailed to Roca Partida the smallest of the island and at first glance you wonder why your staying here for 2 days diving but once in the water you can see why. The life underwater is unbelievable, Whitetip reef sharks gather in the hollows and crevices in there dozens, Galapagos and Silkies swim around you, Silvertips seem to gather together and Mantas seem to just circle you as you complete your safety stop. Massive shoals of fish gather just off the rock, Morays and some of the biggest lobsters you’ll see hide amongst the cracks. The whole experience was excellent, the crew of the Valentina all went out of there way to help with kit and anything you needed and the food was first class.

Hubby, friend and I decided to try the climb on our own only to discover a wonderful person named, Enrique. Enrique took our group up the mountain but unfortunately my husband and I got separated from the group and was solo. Enrique did discover us as we made our way down. My recommendations are to wear good footwear, hat, sunscreen and bring water or an electrolyte type drink. Enrique offers this climb every morning at 9:30. He doesn't charge for being your guide, and tips are optional. TIP the Man! He was my savior that day and saved my a**. He is also a dog trainer and the tips help out with food expenses, etc. LOVE You Enrique ! You are the man!

Bay of Cabo San Lucas

Sheltered harbor great for fishing.

My wife and I have been to Los Cabos and the bay area many times on land and on cruise trips. On our last cruise on Princess the ship will shuttle you into the very pretty small harbor and from there you can strike out to so many points of interest like beaches, just a short water taxi ride or cab ride away, there is good fishing depending on the season, whale watching, snorkling, hotels, all inclusive resorts and this is a destination wedding location for many. With rere exception it is safe but always remember you are in Mexico and be smart. During the day it is 100% safe in my opinion. There is the usual tourist shopping...many places to eat and have drinks and so on. Hills surround the bay and it is just beautiful. Safe swimming in the bay but not on the Pacific side. Many tours are available. Folks there are friendly.

Took a nice hike over from Lands End on a recent Saturday morning. It was a busy place with a few vendors and lots of water taxis coming and going. Beautiful place if you want to spend some time in the water!!! Nice to actually be on Lovers Beach rather than just looking at it from one of the boat rides!
