What to do and see in Breckenridge, Colorado (CO): The Best Things to do

September 28, 2021 Kelli Reichel

Once a mountain mining town decimated and nearly destroyed by river dredging, the surprisingly versatile Breckenridge has bounced back over the last century to become one of Colorado's top year round alpine getaways, with all-seasons activities galore. Restoration of the river area has led to the creation of pristine hiking trails and greenery in the summer months, but winter is the real draw. Skiers flock to the groomed slopes, chutes and bowls of Breckenridge Ski Resort by the million.

Vail Pass Path

Reviewed By GoPlaces789170 - Texas Gulf Coast, United States

This is one of our favorite bike rides. A number of bike rental companies will haul you and your bike to the top of Vail Pass free with the rental of a bike. I've only done the ride from Vail Pass into Frisco, where the ride is mostly downhill. It takes you past Copper Mountain (you can stop and ride the chair lift to the top for great views!) and into Frisco -- a great place to stop for lunch (many wonderful shops and restaurants along Main Street). If you have the bike for the day, you can ride on trails around Lake Dillon. As an option, you can also go down on the other side of Vail Pass into Vail and on to Lionshead. If you're doing more than just riding from Vail back to return your bike, be sure to get a lock for your bike(s). Most places will include it in the rental.

Mohawk Lake Trail

Reviewed By mitchellm915

Pretty straightforward hike with beautiful waterfalls, lakes and above tree line views. About 6 miles round trip from the lower trailhead parking area where you can take the road or catch Spruce Creek Trail through the pines. Suggest you bring a lunch or snacks and plenty of water or a water filter. Trekking poles will help to make your way through some of the rock areas, but are not required. We took about 4.5 hours, taking our time, sitting up above the upper lake to enjoy lunch with a view. Morning hours are best to avoid the afternoon storms.

This Overlook is just a few miles north of Breckenridge - easy to get to. The overlook has amazing views of Lake Dillon. There is a wonderful loop trail that the overlook is on. You can head left or right from the parking lot and you will come to the overlook shortly. Easy hike for people - saw families picnicking as well on the picnic tables at the eastern side of the loop trail.

The historical section of Breckenridge.

Everything was decorated beautifully for Christmas. The shop workers are friendly and helpful. Cute shops, good food and the cutest, quaintest atmosphere. There are only like 2 places to use the bathroom on the entire street, one being at the Welcome Center. And Breck is "bagless" so go prepared with your own bag or be prepared to pay $0.10 for a bag. Just don't drive to Main St. Parking is limited and traffic is plentiful. Walk, take the bus or ride the trolley. Uber is totally unreliable in this town! Lack of drivers and frequent rate surges due to demand made Uber unreliable.

Boreas Pass Road

Reviewed By TravelMoreLiveBetter - Parker, United States

We took Boreas Pass into Breckenridge this weekend and we were not disappointed. It's a beautiful drive with gorgeous scenery all along the way. There are a couple of narrow spots that made me nervous when passing other cars, but there weren't that many people on the road while we were driving it. This would be a gorgeous drive in the fall, when the leaves change. We plan on coming back in a week or 2 to hopefully see the beautiful fall colors. The road is rocky - some spots are worse than others, but I think that most passenger cars could handle it, if they have enough clearance.

Breckenridge Nordic Center

Traversing historic mining roads, cross-country ski and snowshoe trails are mapped and clearly marked offering magnificent scenery of the Ten Mile Range and Breckenridge Ski Resort.

We came to Nordic Center intending to snowshoe but were convinced to try Nordic Skiing...and we are so glad we did! Beautiful, well-groomed trails that were easy to access and suitable for all ages and experience levels. Easy to catch on to but still a workout, especially if you aren’t acclimated to the altitude. There were benches along the trails that allowed us to stop and rest. For those who don’t like or can’t participate in Alpine skiing this is a perfect alternative. Highly recommend.

We had reservations on a night that a winter storm moved in and roads were shut down. We are so glad that we decided to brave the storm. The staff was terrific and the food was outstanding. Hot ramen on a night like this was outstanding. The ramen bowl was well balanced with noodles and meat so that neither took over the dish. The portions were plentiful and the waiter made sure that our glasses were full. I drink whisky, but not bourbons, and the waiter was well informed on what was in stock and he did a great job in suggesting a local batch that I may like. The desert of salted caramel ice cream with popcorn and chocolate sauce was unbelievable. This is a great place with limited seating so be sure to make reservations but certainly make this a for-sure stop when you’re in Breck. I do echo the opinion of a previous reviewer that the young lady at the register near the door could be more customer friendly.

McCullough Gulch

Reviewed By lizbmiller2016 - Jackson, United States

Loved this hike! It was about 2 miles in and 2 miles out, and took us about 3 hours to complete, stopping for lots of pictures. I'm not a fan of big drop offs, so the ride to this hiking trail was ROUGH for me, but slow and steady and you get there. We arrived early - around 8:30 or 9 to avoid the larger crowds and ended up getting a close parking spot. You have to park about a third to a half a mile away from the gated entrance to the area and then you have about another quarter of the mile before you reach the actual trail. Some spots on the trail are hard to tell where you are going, but it is almost impossible to get lost. Gorgeous views of the mountains, a waterfall, and a beautiful lake that feeds the falls await you on the glorious hike. I would rate this trail as an easy to moderate hike for people that are active and well due to narrow bridges, uneven rock and some steep inclines. I also highly suggest taking water with you and possibly a snack to eat. Get up early to beat the crowds. There is one part of the trail that was clearly washed out by a rock slide. The trail completely disappears, so you must traverse the rocks to continue on your journey. The beautiful part of this hike is that everywhere you look and go, there is something spectacular to look at. This is a must do for active folks when visiting Breckenridge. Take home tips: 1. Bring water - I wore my camelback that stored enough H2O for the three of us hiking 2. Wear shoes with a good grip - hiking boots or trail running shoes are best - some areas are smooth and its very easy to fall 3. Go early and avoid the crowds 4. Bring a camera or a GoPro for good pictures

Beautiful views once you get on the trail. The trail is about 2.5 miles. Everyone suggests that you hike the loop counterclockwise go up past the gate on the right and follow the gravel road. If you just want a great view follow gravel rod to the left. When you can see the whole of blur lake and the dam go a couple of hundred yards and it seems like you can see the whole world!
