What to do and see in Bordeaux, Nouvelle-Aquitaine: The Best Art Museums

July 2, 2021 Mollie Coke

After many years of hard work, the "Sleeping Beauty" has awoken from its slumber. The city is beautifully restored and has an ultra-modern public transport system. The “Port of the Moon” is also now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Stone Bridge, with its 17 arches, crosses the Garonne, offering pedestrians a lovely view over the docks and harbor. Take a stroll through old Bordeaux in the Triangle d'Or and stop at Place des Quinconces, France’s largest public square. The city of Bordeaux is an ideal base for exploring the greater wine region’s unforgettable sights and tastes.

The Bassins de Lumières, the world's largest digital art centre, presents monumental immersive digital exhibitions devoted to the major artists in the history of art and contemporary art.

Reviewed By johannaw853 - New York City, United States

The concrete surface of the old submarine base doesn’t prepare you for the intensive of the emotions and colours that you will experience inside. The immersive exhibitions « Gustav Klimt » and « Paul Klee » are really magical, you are invited to jump into artworks in movement and in music in a totally unprecedented way, it is even better than “Atelier des Lumières” in Paris, it is absolutely huge! Art danses on the walls and on the water of the base. You discover the pharaonic dimensions of the site as you walk over a succession of bridges into new areas taking you on a magical dreamlike voyage disconnected from reality among delighted children dancing in the coloured lights on the floor. Truly worth the visit to Bordeaux.

Museum of decorative Arts and Design

The museum is installed in a private residence built in Bordeaux at the end of the 18th century. The museum’s collections represent a fine example of French decorative arts, from Bordeaux in particular, of the 18th and 19th centuries, and provide testimony of the history of Bordeaux, major trading port in the 18th century. The program, also turned on the contemporary times, demonstrates its willingness to become an important place for the diffusion of design culture in France. In 2016, the exhibition area is extended with the opening of the former prison located at the rear of the museum. In 2018, the two buildings are classified as historic monuments by the Ministry of Culture.

Musee des Beaux-Arts

A fine arts museum with a wonderful collection of 17th century Italian, Dutch and Flemish art.

Reviewed By travelsalot102 - Copenhagen, Denmark

Despite its rather small size, the museum has an impressive collection of art, some of it coming from the personal collection of the last king of France Louis XVI. Rubens, Titian and many other famous masters are there. The entrance is just 5€.
