February 11, 2018 Nobuko Falco

Bloubergstrand /ˌbloʊbərɡˈstrænd/ is a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa, along the shores of Table Bay, 15 km due north of the city centre of Cape Town. The name Bloubergstrand literally means "blue mountain beach" in Afrikaans, and is derived from Blaauwberg, a nearby mountain. Bloubergstrand is mainly a residential area, and attracts large numbers of visitors especially kitesurf enthusiasts. The beach at Bloubergstrand is a popular location for a classic view of Table Mountain across the bay and is one of the world's top kitesurf destinations. Robben Island is located 6,9 km west of the coast of Bloubergstrand.

I had 3 private lessons from Kurt and he was great. He really understands the waves, and can explain things in simple progressive steps to help beginners develop quickly. Through his explanations and a little practice, I was able to stand up.. more practice required though to make this a habit!
Equipment was in good condition, and Kurt was communicative through WhatsApp
In my opinion, private lessons are the way to develop quickest, and best with Kurt - the owner of the business!

I booked a package deal for 6 people. Arrived on time.... 10h40 for an 11h00 start, knowing we'd need to be fitted for wetsuits, etc. All ready by 11h00, only to be made to wait by other participants arriving late. Only started our 'lesson' by about 11h20. In the water.... that was fun but due to the storm the previous week, the beach embankment had changed and there were more dumper type waves than waves that could be used for Surfing and the wind was all wrong. That is not the school's fault and they graciously offered another lesson free of charge when it suited. I thought, "Gosh, this is great service" but when my e-mail attempts to rebook went unanswered......... well, that just left a really bad impression.

Asirawan Siam Healing House

Asirawan Siam Healing House & SA-Thai Slave Heritage Reflection Centre offers an authentic Thai Massage experience here in Cape Town in the tradition of the Wat Po Traditional Medical School of Bangkok at the world famous Wat Po Thai Buddhist temple, by a Thai Therapist qualified at this institution. This is done at a family home-based heritage centre that celebrates the 400 year old historical links between Cape Town and Thailand rooted in the United Dutch East India Company slave trade, which brought the first Thai people to Cape Town. Cape Town also hosted the shipwrecked Royal Thai ambassador from the Siam Kingdom of Ayatthuya in 1686. Robben Island in Cape Town and Ayatthuya in Thailand are both recognised as World Heritage Sites. The two sites have had a relationship since 1600. The centre also offers low cost accomodation in the form of a doubleroom, with en-suite bathroom (shower & bath), microwave & Fridge, Dstv & WiFi and use of a pool (R500 per night sharing in season and R390 out of season; discounted for long stays).

Asirawan Siam Healing House & SA-Thai Slave Heritage Reflection Centre is an endeavor to provide an authentic Thai Spa experience with a window on SA-Thai heritage connections which go back 400 years. The heritage background of the 'Coloured' majority population of Cape Town has three main roots, besides a number of other tributaries - indigene Khoena and San peoples; Slaves from South East Asian, India, Madagascar and Africa; and Europeans. Among the slaves brought to the Cape by the United Dutch East India Company over the 17th and 18th century were Thais, Myanmar, Vietnamese, Malay and Indonesian slaves. The early Cape settlement under Governor van der Stel in 1686 also played host to the shipwrecked Royal Thai ambassador for some time. These connections with the old Siam Kingdom at Ayatthuya through the Dutch base there is in the process of being brought to life through a small exhibition alongside a relaxing Thai Spa where qualified therapists from the Wat Po Temple Traditional Medical School in Bangkok get to relieve your aches and pains and help you relax. The Spa is presently open while the exhibition area will be opened by November in time for the summer season. The proprietor is an expert on the subject of Cape Slavery, Indigene people and the emergence of new identities in Cape Town over the past 400 years.

Cape with Pim

Personalised Tours of the Cape Winelands and Western Cape Environs Tutored wine tastings & wine appreciating tours All tours undertaken by Pim who is owner /operator.Guiding in Afrikaans, English and Dutch.

Reviewed By DavidandKatie3 - Bristol, United Kingdom

Our third trip with Pim and again we've had a wonderfully enjoyable time.
All new wineries to visit (how many more can he know?) and a great mix of old/new, rustic/state of the art and of course a selection of the best wines that the Cape has to offer in some stunning settings.
Your tour guide is an escaped corporate career man who is now pursuing what is clearly one of his great passions (and loving every minute of it).
Highly knowledgable for all things grape related and always happy to offer recommendations on which wines to select for a tasting. We have greatly enjoyed Pim's company and insights into life in the Winelands. In addition to the tastings you will also visit a winery with a restaurant where you can take in a relaxed lunch (with wine if you haven't already sampled enough).
Very accommodating, we used our last day in SA for this trip and (by prior arrangement but at no extra cost) we were picked up from our hotel on the Waterfront and dropped off at the end of the day with our luggage at the Airport. A memorable way to end our stay in Cape Town and certainly much better than the usual dead day spent clock watching around a swimming pool. This is worth thinking about.
No hesitation in recommending a tour whatever your previous wine experience - there is something in this for everyone including some fascinating history of the Cape (check out the background to some of the names of the wines at the Muratie Winery).
Enjoy!
