Ruins of Pergamum

Among the most spectacular in Turkey, the site has remarkable remains from the Roman and Byzantine periods.

Reviewed By Rod F - Royal Wootton Bassett, United Kingdom

Pergamon was the largest of the Hellenic states in Anatolia, before being bequeathed to the Romans in 133bce by Attalus III. Eumenes II (197-159bce) modelled the city on the Acroplis of Athens, and it was clearly one of the greatest cities of the Greek world at that time. It was added to and embellished by the Romans under Augustus, Trajan, Hadrian and Caracalla. The superb Temple of Zeus is now in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, but the Trajaneum, palace complex, Temple of Dionysius, and theatre are there to be explored. The library was the second largest in the Roman world after Alexandria, and it was at Pergamon that parchment was invented. The excellent signage around the site gives a very good idea of the splendours of the late Hellenic and early Roman empire period.

The Acropolis

Built on the top of the mountain, offers a great view over Bergama and the lake behind. I recommend the cable car, because the first part of the road is very steep. What would have been, if we could see the Zeus Altar here, in it's original place? Even so, the site is breathtaking.

After visiting all the important sites of Bergama , do not miss this small museum. Many finds from the area are displayed here. The museum consists of a courtyard and two rooms and the displays are well done. The one room has statues and various objects found around Bergama. Look out for the for the floor mosaic of the Medusa head found in a house in Bergama. The other room is the ethnographical part and displays objects used in houses and give you an insight into the lifestyles of the people. In the courtyard is various statues and busts displayed. The museum is situated in the centre of Bergama in the road going to the Acropolis and the Asklepieion and opposite the Anil Hotel where we stayed. Entrance is only 5 Turkish Lira. Do not miss as it is a good way to round off your visit to this lovely city.

If you are there to see Akropolis, your first stop should be Kızıl Avlu (Red Basilica)
It is called Red Basilica after it's red bricks.
It's history is also very interesting. First built for Egyptian Pantheon (it is the only one in Anatolia). Then Greek phanteon, later Christian church...
You should read the detailed signboard.

Haci Hekim Hamami

Reviewed By robnorge - fort collins, colorado

After a day at the ruins, relax at this hamami (bath house) built in the 16th century. A classic Turkish experience...though, of course, it is just a version of what the Romans and Byzantines did. Very welcoming. You are given a room to change...a towel is provided to wrap around yourself. Then you join the locals by first sitting in a hot steam room. Then coming into the main area...sitting down by one of the Fountains, and pouring water (hot, cold, however you like it) over yourself. Depending upon what you have paid for, then, you go (when the masseuse indicates it is your turn) and lie down on a huge marble slab in the center of the room and get a rubdown...first with an abrasive glove (that takes off your old dead skin from touring too long at the Akropolis) and then with a soap foam made of olive oil. Then back to pouring water over yourself. When done, you go back to the changing room and either fall asleep or just chill and get dressed. You pay on the way out...to a good restaurant perhaps. Anyway, DON'T miss out on this historic place...it is definitely part of the Pergamon experience. PS...I am describing the men's side of the bath house...there is a woman's side....I expect it is somewhat the same. Consider it, male or female, part of any visit to this city.
