Little Beaver State Park consists of 562 acres with an 18 acre lake. Depending on the season you can rent paddle boats, row boats, canoes, or kayaks. The park offers picnic shelters, playgrounds, hiking/biking trails, and a campground. It's a nice park but it's just a normal park.

Reviewed By Able12345 - Roanoke, Virginia

As we were booking our trip, the day they offered to us suddenly became unavailable when they discovered we had paid ahead of time. Also, our purchase had included a lunch, and they tried to get us to take a trip that did not include the lunch we had paid for. Ultimately, we discovered this company overcharged us on our credit card. They originally claimed we purchased items that we didn't, but even after changing their story, were never able to give us an itemized bill that made any sense. It became clear that they had charged us incorrectly, but despite several attempts at getting our bill fixed, they have refused to honor their quoted price by fixing the overcharge. It has been a complete nightmare. *Safety* Please be aware that (as of the time of this review) although their website advertises class 3 rapids on this section, it actually has class 4 that proved too much for my little ones.

Someplace Special Gem Mine

Reviewed By Kent S - Springfield, Ohio

This is a real gem mine where many artisans and craft people spend hours searching through buckets of sand for gem quality or maybe I should say stones of sufficient quality to make pendants and other delights for sale at fairs and festivals. Unlike those commercial flumes with bags of sand for sale to kids that have been seeded with a variety of gem stones.....many that most likely came from here......this is the real thing and a bucket of sand purchased for about $10 might not hold a single gem because you are sifting through what was left behind by the ice age and that can be about anything or nothing,. My grandson and I found a beautiful blue Sodalite Stone that we had shaped, polished and mounted for $20. The mine is located back in the mountains and getting there requires traversing a couple of cow paths and badly rutted roads. Our GPS really didn't help much as the roads were not reflected. Following the owners written directions on his website is the only way to get there. You will be kind of shocked as the water flume and entire operation is a cluster of run down sheds surrounded by one or two abandoned log houses, etc. You sort of get the feeling like, maybe I really don't want to go back in this far? The owner of the mine was great and extremely helpful. It is cash only, no credit cards. My grand son had a good time and the cost is $10 for a 2.5 gallon bucket of sand that you fill and carry to the flume yourself. No entry fee, I couldn't tell you if tax was included, and you can keep all that you find.

Sandstone Falls

Reviewed By Thomas B - Westerville, Ohio

My wife and I were visiting the area and wanted to enjoy all the sights in the Fayetteville, WV area. If you are not familiar with the area, make sure you stop at the Sandstone Visitor Center for directions so that you know how to get to the falls. You will need to drive to Hinton, WV, cross the bridge and take a small road back north to the falls. In many places the road is quite narrow, so be careful, but he trip is worth the effort. The full width of the river crosses sandstone cliffs creating many falls. You can see these from a short trail as well as longer trails. Fishing is available too.

This National Park is a small, out of the way gem. Includes an overlook of the New River and the Gorge, hiking trails, picnic area, restrooms, and a playground. The park has a stunning view that many will miss out on! It's about 6 miles off the Interstate. Worth the side trip!!

Stonehaven Golf Course

Reviewed By Marty H - Columbus, Ohio

Stonehaven is a beautiful mountain course. The design captures the beauty of the West Virginia mountains. My husband and I had a little trouble getting started. We were at the starter's shed for our 9:20 tee time. Two foursomes of ladies playing ladies day showed up for their 9:30 tee time. The starter said, "Oh, he sent them over early". However, instead of sending us (a twosome) off ahead of them, he told us to start on 2 or 3. There were groups playing 2, 3, and 4. We finally went back and started on 2 when the previous group finished the hole. The ladies were approaching 1 green. So, we ended up playing where we would have been if he had simply sent us out ahead of the ladies.
The halfway house was closed, but the cart girl came around. Be aware that she is not given sandwiches before noon. She reached us at 11:50, when she had no sandwiches. She was very quick in getting them to us when she did get them. Like all cart girls, she was very friendly.
It is really important to play the correct tees for your game. Otherwise you will lose a lot of balls.
We have played all the Greenbrier courses several times, and both Stonehaven and Woodhaven have more sheer beauty. However, facilities, management and conditions of the courses at The Greenbrier are superior.

Peddlers Market Antiques & Collectibles

Reviewed By cheryl h - Durham, North Carolina

This is just the type of place we love finding. There were a lot of collectibles (what we mainly look for), antiques, vintage, toys, advertising, strange and unique items, primitives, glassware, vintage clothes, furniture, plates, tools and anything else you could possible be looking for. They also have free coffee which tasted great on this unusually cold November day.

The place was very well organized and easy to get around which made it a real pleasure. My brother collects Popeye and I found a music box (it didn't work but that didn't matter because it was such a great looking piece) to give him at christmas. The man who had that booth just happened to be in the store and we spent about 1/2 hour just talking and kidding around with him and having some great laughs. We really enjoyed meeting him. And by the way, my brother loved the music box and immediately put it up on the shelf with other popeye items (it looks awesome sitting up there too).

If we are ever in the area again this will be one of the very first places we plan on visiting. I just hope the same great people are there. Happy holidays guys...all of you were great.

Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and Youth Museum

As the focal points of Beckley’s lovely New River Park, the Exhibition Coal Mine, the Rahall Company Store, Mine Museum and the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia draw thousands of people to the area annually. The unique underground mine, the recreated coal camp, the Youth Museum and the Mountain Homestead are surrounded by inviting lawns, colorful flowers, picnic areas, an imposing coal miner statue and a whimsical 20 ft. “Peace Totem. At the Exhibition Coal Mine, one can ride through the dark passages of a vintage coal mine. The guides are veteran miners and provide firsthand accounts of the daily responsibilities and tasks of past and present day miners. In addition to the Mine, one can tour the Mine Museum and the period coal camp situated throughout the grounds. Lovingly restored, the Coal Company House, Superintendent’s Home, Pemberton Coal Camp Church, and the Helen Coal Camp School, give visitors a true representation of early 20th century coal camp life. Adjacent to the Exhibition Mine, the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia is open to the public year round. The central exhibit area features an average of three different interactive exhibits yearly. Group tours include a visit to the Museum’s Planetarium. Behind the Museum’s main building, stands the Mountain Homestead. Developed to enrich history studies, guides tell the stirring story West Virginian’s hearty pioneer settlers as they interpret the restored log cabin, one room schoolhouse, barn, weaver’s shed, general store, moonshine still and blacksmith shop.

We found this place on the WV state website and thought it would be a neat place to stop on our way to PA. The staff was VERY friendly and helpful. The kids loved riding on the mine cart & learning how hard it was to mine coal and the trial & tribulation they encountered back in the late 1800's through the early 1900's in the coal industry. Our guide was AWESOME and very energetic, he kept us intrigued the whole time. Then next door is a fun kids museum. A MUST SEE! Enjoy!

One thing I did like about the place was the original ways they made shelves to put merchandise on. They used rocks, boards, and even trees. However, there were many cluttered and very narrow booths (a pet peeve of mine) and we just passed them by. It's not worth knocking something over or tripping just to see what it in the booth.

Tamarack

A regional showcase of WV made Arts & Craft offers special events, craft demonstrations, a Fine Art gallery, a Theater, and a food court featuring treats created by our master chefs.

We have been to Tamarack several times over the years as we are traveling the West Virginia Turnpike. It is a very nice respite from your travels; you can do it justice in about an hour. It has reasonably priced dining; we prefer the cafeteria style option, with a variety of choices that you can see before you order. The West Virginia crafts are outstanding and most reasonable; on this trip we selected a handmade basket purse, beautifully crafted by a local artist, for only forty dollars. There are jams, candies, woodwork ... the full array. There is also an art gallery which changes selections; this time it was West Virginia natural scenes and very well done. The wait staff in the shops and cafeteria are efficient and courteous.
