BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir

Reviewed By Taylor B - Chicago, Illinois

I've never been to the Taj Mahal in India. I have been to the B'ai Temple in Wilmette. But I've never seen anything like BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir off Highway 59 in northwest suburban Bartlett. Opened in 1953, it is a traditional Hindu place of worship built by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. It is a religious sect headed by Pramukh Swami Maharaj. The magnificent complex is built of hand carved Italian marble and Turkish limestone. The Mandir is the largest of its kind in Illinois and was constructed according to guidelines outlined in ancient Hindu texts of temple architecture. The complex covers over 27 acres and, in addition to the Mandir, includes a Haveli and a small bookstore. The Haveli is a cultural center in which weekly congregations are held. The Mandir is open daily for worship and to visitors. Extraordinary steps were taken to construct the Mandir. The limestone and marble stones were quarried in Turkey and Italy and shipped to India, where they were hewn and carved by 2,000 craftsmen. In total, 70,000 cubic feet of stone was chiseled and shaped with intricate patterns and designs. Once the stones were sculpted, they were shipped to Chicago and fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle. The Mandir occupies 22,000 square feet and is 78 feet high, 112 feet wide and 215 feet long. It is topped by 16 domes and has 151 pillars, 117 arches, five pinnacles and four balconies and took over 16 months to complete. It is a beautiful, peaceful place, regardless of your religious and cultural background, well worth visiting.

We had a blast with our 7 and 4 year old grandchildren. They loved having so many rides to choose from and we enjoyed the all rides included admission price. The park was immaculate and the rides are in pristine condition. Most rides are nostalgic and from other kiddie parks which makes it very nostalgic. My husband and I commented several times at how nice the park looked (lovely summer plantings, koy pond and all the buildings were freshly painted.
One of the many highlights of the day was getting to visit Santa Claus. He has his own beautifully decorated summer house and each family has a private visit with him. Santa was so sweet with our grandchildren.
Thank you to the owners of Santa Village for restoring this park and making it a magical place. I would say this might be the top kiddie amusement park in the U.S.

I absolutely love this quaint winery and the wine selection, especially the fruit wine. The winery in Roselle is small and quaint and offers wine tasting at a great price. The fruit wines are the best, especially the blueberry and strawberry. As of recently, their wines are sold at a department store in Chicago, and I couldn’t be happier. Great wines, nice history, and great gifts available!

We love the 135 acres of fields, forests, marshes and streams right off Schaumburg, Road in the Village itself. Also the fact that this is the way the area was 100 years ago in this area. There are 3 miles of paths ( all handicapped accessible) and flowers of all kinds. In addition for the children, there is the Bison's Bluff Nature Playground that is always filled with kids having a great time in a nature set up.
There is a Nature Center, a Heritage Farm, and an old Log Cabin to explore and learn what was going on 100 years ago when this was a small German Village. In addition 4 times during the year there are special "Highlights" available. And all year there are things going on at the Nature Center and the Heritage Farm.
Hours vary during the year, but normally 8 to 8 in the Summer Season and 8 to 5 in the Winter Season; and the whole thing is FREE!
We love to come for a walk, and the Grand kids love to walk, see, learn and play at the Playground!! This is an Attraction Not to be Missed!

This is our new favorite venue. Honestly the back row is as close as the priciest seats in bigger venues. It's intimate and the sound is really great too. It's an old theater with the accompanying charm AND small seats :-)

Sears Centre Arena

I already have submitted a review on Sears Centre Arena. It has been published. Why did TripAdvisor place this subject on my website again? They don't bother to explain their mistakes or oversights. They do a lot of dumb things. This is just one of them. But, for the record, Sears Centre Arena has became a popular venue for high school basketball in Illinois, a site for sectional and supersectional competition. The students and players love it because it is much larger that a high school gym and offers a big-time feeling, like playing in United Center or Madison Square Garden. And there is plenty of parking. The facility is very convenient, located just off the I-290 expressway in Hoffman Estates.

When I first saw the Gail Borden Public Library I was so impressed with the building. And the location near the Fox River adds to its beauty. The amenities offered by this library to the community are extensive. Of course you can check out books, but they also offer classes on how to use various types of computers, they offer educational programs and hold community meetings there. It is a resource of unlimited information. Elgin is so fortunate to have such an amazing library.

Picture Show

Reviewed By Steve B - Carol Stream

Been to this theater several times. They do NOT show "first run" movies. The seats are powered recliners in all theaters. It's decently clean. The screens are as large as in any average cineplex. Sound quality is ok.
If you want to see a picture on the big screen instead of your TV at a reasonable price, this is the place.
