These folk really know granite. Ask anything, and they’ll know the answer: types, transport, cutting, sculpting, uses. Plus there’s much on the social issues of Barre and the workers. Lots of immigrants: Basques, Danes, Italians, Scots, Quebeckers and more. Plus the rough politics. There’s one story of a local Italian anarchist who got shot dead by a socialist during a labor riot. Truly a labor of love, a tour is max an hour. Kids would like it. Give it a chance and visit.

Rock of Ages

The world's largest quarry.

Getting to see the granite quarry was something else. There is granite everywhere in the area and to see where it came from was interesting. We were told they have barely scraped the surface of this quarry and it has been in operation for something like 100 years. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable with these types of facts. Very, very interesting.

This cemetery is like a museum for granite artistry. The monuments are works of art that are tributes, some to individuals and some to extended families.

We went to another concert at the opera house and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is such a comfortable space and the sound is excellent. It doesn’t matter where you sit or what kind of performance you are going to see.
