What to do and see in Baku, Absheron Region: The Best Cultural Tours

July 3, 2021 Enedina Augsburger

The historical center of Baku reveals its tumultuous past, from its roots as a Persian capital, through its oil boom to its Soviet occupation. The old city is a maze of alleys, mosques, historic buildings and remnants of fortification, including the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and the Maiden Tower, now listed among UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. Much more than a historic site, the city hosts vibrant arts and cultural activities, as well as a bustling modern business sector.

This was a fantastic tour, and I enjoyed every moment of it! The sights truly are incredible - different than anything you will see in most places around the world. Everyone in the group was great, and the guide was kind, knowledgeable, and fun. I enjoyed spending my day on this tour, and I was sad when it was over. I want to especially mention how great Zaur is - there is no one better in Azerbaijan with whom to spend time and see the city. He is amazing! I very strongly recommend this tour.

We leave Baku at 9:00am in the morning, with some stop-points in "Beshbarmag Dag" (Five-Fingered Mountain), Guba City and Masdargah, approximately at 13:00pm we are going to be in the highest village of all Europe - the Khinalug! ABOUT KHINALUG By some definitions Xınalıq (2335m) is Europe’s highest village. Its upper half retains many ancient stone houses that form distinctively austere stepped terraces up a steep highland ridge. And the whole scene is often magically wrapped in spooky clouds that part sporadically to reveal 360-degree views of the surrounding Caucasus. Apart from examining the one-room museum and gazing at the hypnotic views, the main attraction is meeting and staying with Xınalıq’s hardy shepherd folk who have their own language (Ketsh) and still live much of their lives on horseback. Bring warm clothes – nights can be icy cold.

Mud Vulcanos - Nearby to Gobustan we will travel to see Mud Vulcanos. The unique Ateshgah Fire Temple - is one of Azerbaijan’s most remarkable sight. According to historical sources, before the construction of the Indian Temple Of Fire in Surakhani at the end of the 17th, the local people also worshiped at this site because of the “seven holes with burning flame”. Yanar Dag (Fire Mountain) - Yanar Dag is a natural gas fire which blazes continuously on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula on the Caspian Sea near Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan (a country which itself is known as "the Land of Fire").
