After going to nearby Domfront with visitors and finding everything closed, I take them to Bagnoles where there are always restaurants, bars and shops open. It is a pleasant place to mooch about for an hour or so, or even longer in the woods and park if the weather is fine.

La Ferme du Cheval de Trait

Visited here in a group at the beginning of May 2013. Following a 'meet and greet' with some of these impressively big yet gentle draught horses, we went inside the rustically styled restaurant for a huge traditional Normandy lunch. Three courses plus lots of cider, sitting at scrubbed wooden benches, and we were ready for the afternoon's entertainment. This was in a covered Seating area outside and consisted of a demonstration of what these magnificent horses can do other than just pulling ploughs .A team of riders demonstrated their equestrian skills, standing on the backs of the horses at varying speeds, including full gallop --if these had been war horses on a mediaeval battle field, they would have been terrifying! Teams of two, three or five horses showed their maneuverability pulling chariots and carriages. There were moments of humour too provided by a donkey and miniature ponies.
The proprietor gave a talk on the history of the breeds and how they were used through the ages. Unfortunately this was all in French, although we were given a written translation of the main parts.
A thoroughly good trip and would certainly visit again.

Visited here with family and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Such a beautiful old building. It was slightly lacking in English guides, but we managed with the use of the website and online descriptions. We had some friends who visited around the same time and they went on the English tour, which by the sound of it wasn't much different to our experience.

Bagnoles is a small very pretty village/town in l'Orne, Normandy, France. The central Water Park (La Vee) is a pleasure to stroll around on a sunny day. We found a disused railway station and took a ride through the forest on the 'Velo Rail', a delightful novelty for the fairly fit. Bagnoles abounds with typically French cafes and coffee shops and exquisite hotels. Don't miss out on purchasing something from a local Patisserie - it will make your English bakery look (and taste) quite dull. The adventure (Go Ape) playground is great for kids and adults alike. A special place with gentile folks where I could easily retire to.

La Michaudiere

Reviewed By Passagienne - Domfront, France

La Michaudiere is a family owned and run attraction in the southern Normandy countryside. It is well signposted and easy to find with plentiful parking. Dedicated to the working horse the old buildings house various displays of artifacts and items of interest from yesteryear. There is a short film from the 1940s in one of the barns, and although this is in French, it is easily understood.
We had a meal here before the main display and it was good, well served and delicious. The all in price for entrance to the complex with its various displays, a meal and the afternoon spectacular was very good value.
The display area is sheltered so we were in shade on one of the hottest days of the year. After an explanatory introduction in French we were treated to a wonderful display of stunningly lovely animals going through their paces, from a chariot pulled by four horses abreast as in Roman times, to the charm of a 'little donkey shay'. The whole was an absolute joy. I would have given this attraction five stars if there had been more information available in other languages as it must attract many foreign holidaymakers. However the website (www.lamichaudiere.fr) does have this choice, but not everyone has access to this information before they visit.
I would recommend this to anyone with the slightest interest in history, horses, or just the Norman countryside. We were sent on our way with a choice of cider, wine or soft drinks under the benevolent eye of the family pet.

Booked a last minute trip to the Moto GP in Le Mans and wanted somewhere that would give us a good ride to the circuit and came across Bagnoles by accident, we stayed in the Hotel Spa Du Beryl and what a great surprise it was when we arrived.
The town is a buzzing little place with nice bars and restaurants all within a few paces of this hotel and quite a few others, I always thought this part of France was a bit boring but how wrong I was, will be going back without a doubt, give it a go you'll be surprised.
(Not sure why it's given this the title of Piscine de Bagnoles de l'Orne)
