Cedre Gouraud

The cedre Gouraud is sign posted and a totally silly tree to go see. BUT, the 8-10 kilometer drive in the area is full of stunningly beautiful trees. If you've not seen monkeys, you can see them near the totally dead tree. We laughed out loud at this tourist come-on; yet the cedar tree Forests around Azrou are worth the visit.

We offer visitors the unique opportunity to come and join us for (half) a day or more to carry out fieldwork in the forest. Our experienced guides will introduce you to some of the survey techniques we use to count the number of monkeys and will help you understand more about their behaviour in the wild while you are following a wild group of monkeys in this stunning forest! We also offer a Moroccan lunch with local families for the full day programme. All your money will go towards local people, our local staff and the conservation of the endangered Barbary macaque. On our drive through the cedar Forests lining the N13 road, we came upon dozens of Barbary apes. We got out of the car and slowly approached and they appeared acclimated to humans. They obviously wanted food and we saw them taking nuts and chips out of the hands of other tourists. We offered roasted peanuts from our plane but they weren't interested. However, several took them and promptly spit them out. We saw a female with a very young baby which clung to her belly. Watching them climb the trees and then fling themselves from branch to branch was entertaining. They were much bigger than we'd anticipated. Hopefully, their lack fear for humans won't create problems for them in the future. It's amazing they aren't hit by the cars that were whizzing by at high speeds. There are Forests on both sides of the highway. Fun diversion on a long drive to the desert.

Our Guide Karim was passionate about the country we hiked and camped in, Karim was born in this area. This enthusiasm made the hike and overnight camp a memorable trip. We hiked from the village to the camping spot and were rewarded with seeing the apes as we neared the end of our hike. To top it off the apes came from all direction around our camp and stayed in the cedar trees around us for the night. An experience we will not forget. Karim as extreamly helpful as a guide and helped us arrange a change we had to make to our intinery. All in all a ten out of ten experience. I hope all that take this trip enjoy it as much as we did. Karim will go out of His way to make it so.

Go the Mountains. It is like travelling to Switzerland, the town Ifran is wonderful and full of charm. So NOT Morocco, its modern and you feel like you have just gone back to Europe. Nice for a change.
