What to do and see in Austria, Austria: The Best Scenic Walking Areas

May 4, 2022 Yuk Petri

As home to majestic mountains, opulent palaces, and high culture, Austria's attractions are classically sumptuous and enduring. But beyond the waltzes, the strudels, the alpine summits, and Habsburg architecture, its modern cities are proof of just how easily Austria combines the contemporary with the historic.

Weingut Tegernseerhof

The historical roots of Tegernseerhof go back over 1000 years. Holy Roman Emperor Henry II granted the Benedictine monastery of Tegernsee two oxgangs of land in Wachau. In 1176, Tegernseerhof was built and named after its owner. Today, Tegernseerhof is owned by the Mittelbach family. The winery has been in their possession for five generations. The name has been preserved, like the ancient knowledge of viniculture, passed on from one generation to the next. The Tegernseerhof vineyards are located on the best slopes of the Wachau region. They are characterized by steep terraces of primary rock, with optimal exposure to sun and wind. The result is an incredible wealth of different aromas, reflected in the different Smaragd wines of Tegernseerhof. Whether Grüner Veltliner or Riesling, each wine has a personality all of its own.

Old Town

Reviewed By TatteredBackpack - New York City, United States

Simply a gorgeous place, on par with other world attractions like Venice and Macchu Picchu. Even the bus/train ride from Salzburg is beautiful. However, do try to go before the summer crush. We were there in May when it was still chilly and it was already getting crowded once the buses rolled in. Definitely stay overnight so that you can do the fantastic hikes in the area like Echernthal or around the lake., or down the hill. Also, it's a different experience to have the old town to yourself at night.
