What to do and see in Arizona, United States: The Best Dams

April 14, 2022 Fernanda Pittenger

The state of Arizona is one that features a fantastic diversity of landscapes and areas of geological interest. North Arizona is famous for the Grand Canyon, a colorful chasm with steep rocky walls more than a mile deep and stretching some 277 miles alongside the Colorado River. Other notable destinations in North Arizona include Flagstaff set alongside the San Francisco Peaks which has the largest ponderosa pine forest, Museum of Northern Arizona, and is close to a number of national parks and monuments. On the south side of Arizona lies the city of Phoenix, the largest in Arizona. Notable day trips in Phoenix include the Heard Museum which is one of America's largest collections of Native American art, Phoenix Museum of History, as well as the Desert Botanical garden which has a great collection of desert plants.

Glen Canyon Dam

The controversial dam that was built to create Lake Powell.

Regardless if you think this is your cup or tea or not, you will be surprised at how interesting Glen Canyon Dam is! You do not have to do the tour on the visit as there are displays depicting the history of the dam, HOWEVER, I would highly recommend paying the $4 to do the tour. You'll get to see far more interesting parts of the dam with a guide from the Park Service if you pay the small fee. The spots fills up fast for the tour, so be sure to reserve your spot the day before you want to go or first thing that morning. I do not recall the name of the guide, but she was very knowledgeable and by coincidence also a native of Page. Be sure you read the fine print if you do the tour as they have a strict purse/backpack policy in place for security reasons (which I totally understand).

Glen Canyon Dam Overlook

This is on the outskirts of Page with a short walk down to the viewpoint. There are excellent views of the river side of the dam and of the river canyon. Well worth a short stop and short walk down to the viewpoint. Limited parking but we had no trouble finding a place mid day.

The rock formations are truly stunning. Shapes, sizes, colors and views of Lake Powell make it a worth while stop. A turn off from South 89 just before the dam crossing. A gravel road leads to a parking lot about a mile down. Also passes Hanging Garden Trail where you can go swimming if you choose.

Parker Dam

As the tallest dam in the US and built in 1934, finished in 1938, this project shows the talent and ability of American engineering. The four turbine generators produce clean electricity used around the West. The views both up lake and down lake are magnificent. Unfortunately, the public is no longer allowed to take a tour within the dam for security reasons, a sign of the times, but certainly worth the time to view this great old structure...
