Chateau de Foix

Journey back to the days of chivalry ! From the heights of its rocky crag, Foix castle with its three towers and soaring walls offers exceptional views of the Pyrenees. Built in the year one thousand, it was originally a military fortress before being transformed into the home of the illustrious Counts of Foix such as Gaston Fébus, author of the 'Livre de la Chasse' (Book of the Hunt) among other works, and Henri IV who became King of France. It now houses the Ariège département museum: the bed of Henri IV is on display. The castle's various rooms are dedicated to the art of building in the Middle Ages, the history of the castle and of the Counts of Foix, as well as temporary exhibitions. Exhibitions • Gaston Fébus, Enlightened Prince of the Pyrenees. • The Universe of King Henri IV. • Andorra. Voyage to the Heart of the Pyrenees. • Into médiéval builder's secret.

It is another of many impressive castles in France. We loved it! There is a nice museum inside, archery lessons, great views from the towers, absolutely everything I need to enjoy a castle visit :) What is more, the ticket here is very cheap and all the staff members were very helpful and friendly.

Eglise Saint Vincent

The whole town of Ax-les-Thermes is interesting and worth a visit, but after actively looking around the quaint old sections and enjoying the thermal springs, the church was a lovely place to sit and rest. It's history, structure and windows provide a great atmosphere for reflection.

Station de ski Ax 3 Domaines

Reviewed By davidpaskins - Capendu, France

I have been taking my family to Ax for 6 years now. It is a lovely ancient thermal spa town in the Pyrenees with bags of history and a ski resort above the town. There is a great market twice a week, lots of small independent shops and restaurants, and plenty of characterful places to stay. The resort itself is compact and very family-friendly, but still has 75km of pistes to suit all ages and abilities. It is less chi-chi than the alps, less banging than Andorra, and cheaper than both in terms of lift passes and ski hire. If you avoid French school holidays it isn't very crowded either. There are pistes up to 2400m and plenty of snow cannons as well, so the conditions are generally good. There are also lots of other great winter sports activities available, such as: dog sledding, Nordic skiing, ski-joering, snow trekking,igloo-building, ice climbing, sledging, & snow biking. We have now started going in the autumn too. The place has a lovely micro climate: not too hot, not too cold. There are fantastic walks amongst the forests and glacial lakes, nature reserves, tree parks, canoeing & rafting, swimming & tennis, great mountain biking. It is perfect for relaxing active holidays.
