Haystack Rock

Haystack Rock is a unique 235 feet monolith that attracts wildlife and tourists alike and is part of the Oregon Coast’s geological history, formed millions of year ago by lava flows that created many of the dramatic capes and headlands along the coast. Haystack Rock is protected under U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a seabird nesting colony and it is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and is a State protected Marine Garden. The Rock is home to nesting seabirds in the summer and marine invertebrates all year. Tidepool seekers are beckoned by its wonders every day. The Haystack Rock Awareness Program (HRAP) is a stewardship and environmental educational program whose mission is to protect, through education, the intertidal and bird ecology of the Marine Garden and Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge at Haystack Rock. HRAP offers an extensive interpretive program on the beach during the spring and summer months around low tide.

I would highly recommend this area it was absolutely gorgeous. I had no idea that they actually had a beach in Oregon. I thought most of the coastline was just Rocky. But Haystack rock the whole area Cannon Beach is absolutely gorgeous wide and long beaches to do plenty of walking on. The sun is out finally after two days, it’s been raining hard! it will be an awesome place to watch the sunset. I WOULD return.

Nehalem Bay State Park

A popular state park.

Beautiful state park with paved, level sites. We have a 40 ft 5th wheel and were able to fit into site A41 with no trouble. The sites along this stretch of the A loop seemed to have a little more room around them than sites in the rest of the campground. We backed up to woods for a little privacy. The loops can be tight to drive around as you're getting to your site, especially when it's crowded with lots of people and vehicles in or near the road. We arrived on a weekday and didn't have any trouble. There are wonderful paved bike trails at this park, as well as plenty of beach access. Verizon and AT&T both worked well there. We ate dinner one night at the Pizza Garden nearby which was wonderful, they use all fresh ingredients.

We rented one of their small trolling boats (we crammed with 5 people) , and it included 4 baited crab rings for 2 hours. You set them out at intervals and then go back 15 minutes later to check for crabs. We probably got over 100 crabs in that time, but they were either under the size limit or female, which you can’t keep. We laughed all day and ended up with 2 crabs that were legal. Heck, it was a great day anyway! They cooked them for us and showed us how to clean them, and then we fought over them at dinner.
Patio is fun in the sun, drank beer while waiting for them 2 cook. We figured it was probably $75 per crab, but you just can’t pay enough for laughter, and sharing the day with good friends

This was a very unmarked beach, but it did have pit toilets. It was beautiful with picnic tables, a nice beachcombing walk and a nice spot to stretch the legs along the way. We would reccommend and return.

I first visited in August of 2013 and was surprised how uncrowded it was. The weather was chillier than I expected! Then in October 2017 I returned and the weather was quite similar. We enjoyed eating ripe blackberries off wild bushes and LOVED exploring the tide pools. Both times we walked a 10k through Ava.org. This is a gorgeous beach for a relaxing, low-key visit.

The trail from Ecola Point - over the river and through the woods to Indian Beach - is closed due to an ongoing earth-slide. But, it is open to the slide and is a wonderful up-down trail on the edge of the Ecola bluff. Wow! Wonderful views in every direction.

Oregon Beach Rides

Reviewed By Rivvy - MA

We wanted to check out the Oregon coast without just spending the whole day in the car or on Cannon Beach. We actually found OBR on TripAdvisor, and have had pretty good luck based on reviews, so decided to check it out. Who doesn't want to take a horseback ride on the beach, right?! Best decision we made all vacation!! The impromptu activity was perfect. To start, the ride there is gorgeous!! Windy back roads through the mountains, and then it's pretty flat but beautiful as you make your way into the park. The ranch was easy to find, and there were clean public bathrooms right at the parking lot. We signed a waiver, the guides gave their little speech about safety, and then we were up on our horses. Seeing the horses and how their handlers treated them made me so happy. They obviously had a very happy life, and were loved like we love our dog. They were very clean, healthy looking, beautifully groomed, and the guides whispered little sweet nothings. One guide even itched a horse's leg for her, when she couldn't get the itch herself! I was put with Sissy, and my boyfriend with Belle. We walked up the dunes, and down a good length of beach. The mountains behind us and ocean in front of us were gorgeous! We always felt safe atop the horses, unlike other experiences. There were kids with us from another family, and they seemed happy an unafraid the entire time as well. After we walked for about half an hour we stopped and the guides took pictures for us on our phones and cameras. Hooray! We walked back down the beach and dunes, as the guide shared his experiences, knowledge, and tips with us. I wish we had booked the two hour ride because one hour was not enough! LOVED!

We love going to Oswald West State Park. It's a nice hiking trail walk from Hwy 101 to the beach through the trees. The trail is very well maintained by the Parks Dept. It's about a 10 minute walk from the parking lot to the beach. We love to go at low tide because of all the fun tide pools. Our dogs have a blast running on the beach. There are great places to picnic in the grass right above the beach or down on the beach itself. We come back every year.
