Aranjuez is the home of Palacio Real (Royal Palace), the spring residence of Spanish kings since the late 1880s. The beautiful gardens surrounding the palace are just as famous as the residence and are the inspiration for “Concierto de Aranjuez” by Joaquin Rodrigo, one of Spain’s most significant composers of the 20th century. During the summer, join the local tradition of eating dinner in the picnic area next to the Tagus River. UNESCO designated Aranjuez as a World Heritage landscape in 2001 and a very large casino was built in 2005.

Being retirees we cannot walk far so opted for the Chiqui train tour of the Gardens. It proved a wise move as the weather was not kind. Would like to see the Gardens again in summer.

We were staying on the nearby campsite so all we had to do was cross the footbridge over the river, walk through the beautiful Gardens and 15 minutes later we were in the centre of Aranjuez.
What a truly stunning city, with beautiful large plazas, beautiful palace and absolutely stunning Gardens.
A delight and one that should not be missed.

The Jardin del Principe is a very large park and it is very enjoyable to walk there, with plenty of peace and quiet. There was an interesting place there where they joined several cypress trees to make a sort of protected place.

We took a walk in the Jardin del Principe until we came to this small museum. The ships or barges were beautiful and we enjoyed seeing them. I wish that they would allow photography here because none of the exhibits will deteriorate if you photograph them without flash.

Ferdinand VI of Spain has given the order to build the Royal Church of San Antonio a chapel dedicated to Saint Antony of Padua as an Oratorio to replace an earlier private chapel constructed during the reign of Philip IV of Spain. It stands on the south side of a large parade square known as 'Mariblanca' which leads into the courtyard of Royal Palace known as Plaza de Parejas or the Couples Square who is located besides the palace.
By driving to Aranjuez, you should drive to the “Calle de Andalucía” on the end of it before the arch you have the chapel on your left, just drive under the arch and you have on your right the “Tourist Info”. Continue until the roundabout and turn to the left to take the parallel “Calle de Florida” and try to find a parking space it is for free in those two streets. By leaving the Tourist office you have on the opposite side the “Casa de Casa de Caballeros y Officios”, going through this one you arrive on the “Plaza das Parejas” and you find your selve at a few steps of the “Royal Palace” with the “Jardin de la Isla”.Take your time do visit the “Jardin de la Isla” who contains also the Fountain of Hercules and Anteo, a nice garden to visit, and you also find public toilets into.

Fuente de Hércules y Anteo.
In front of the “Royal Palace you have the “Jardin del Parterre”, a nice garden who has the Fountain of Hercules and Anteo on the end and bordering on the river Tajo.
The Fountain is the most spectacular part of the park, and when you return on you steps towards the Palace, on your right you will have a small bridge who leads you into the “Jardin de la Isla” on the right side of the Palace, also a need park to visit with some Fountains and a small but very beautiful waterfall on the right when crossing the small bridge and heading towards the toilets.
After this visit, comeback to the small bridge and leave the park straight ahead and doing so you arrive on the “Plaza das Parejas” or the Couples Square.
Aranjuez maybe not that great, but it is a need place to visit.
