Sifnos Trails

Sifnos Trails is the name of the hiking trails network of the island of Sifnos in the Aegean Sea, Greece. The network has a total length over 100 km, divided in 19 beautiful trails.

Sifnos is an island for hikers. If you just want a short hike from Apollonia to the very interesting hamlet of Castro or you want a demanding hike, you will find both. We did both last October.

Narlis Farm

Local micro-farming and Cooking experience in Sifnos While on Sifnos, a unique and fascinating way to experience first-hand authentic local food production, is a visit to Sifnos Farm Narlis. Sifnian cuisine, renowned for its mouth-watering recipes throughout Greece, is based mainly on vegetables and local aromatic herbs and here in Farm Narlis we are looking to revive old and native processes of growing and cooking, based on products grown on our land. At Farm Narlis we offer tailor-made lessons in the local diet, micro-farming food production and cooking, to suit your needs and interests. Our micro-farm is situated at the heart of the island, between the villages of Apollonia and Kato Petali, on the road to Kastro. Below, we give four suggestions for you to experience our farm and products: This is the most involved experience on the farm. In this session we will start the day by preparing together a hearty traditional Sifnian breakfast, based on local thyme honey, home-made jams, cheese from our farm and fresh organic eggs from our very happy free range chickens. While we enjoy breakfast, we will discuss the structure of the rest of our session. Time to start work! The wood burning oven needs to be lit early so this is the first thing we do together for our meal preparation and before we leave for the field. In the field, you will collect, with our guidance, the fresh ingredients that will be used for our meal. Here, you will have the opportunity to find out all about the efforts of the local farmer in growing and harvesting vegetables, in this 'unfriendly' natural environment. An understanding of how the crops are produced will help you appreciate the materials you will cook with and immerse yourself in our local farming practices. Back in the stone-built hut you will learn to prepare a complete traditional Sifnian lunch or dinner which will comprise of two different kinds of salads, two starters and a main course. We will enjoy the results of our efforts all together, just like the locals, around our wooden table, next to the wood burning oven, watching each dish being cooked. Local white wine or our own medium sweet red, which has matured in the sun, accompany all the meals. We will finish the meal with fruits of the season such as water melons, cherry plums, melons, pears and apricots, all grown in our land, from old and rare varieties. The suggested duration of the morning session is 3-4 hours for optimum enjoyment of all the activities. For your convenience, we provide a guide for the duration of your visit. We can provide a guide who speaks English, French or Russian. When it's time to go, we will give you a complementary sample of produce from our farm as a goodbye gift and as a reminder of your visit. Additional activities to enhance your experience while in Sifnos Farm Narlis are: Gardening: have a go at looking after our vegetable garden and experience first-hand the unique traditional techniques of growing and harvesting. Ceramic lessons: if you would like to find out how the pots you cooked in and the plates you used are made, then come and have a go at making them! The ceramic workshop that produces them is housed in one of the farm's buildings. Afternoon Session in the Farm - The same experience as above but without breakfast. **** Dinner.=With out lesson!! (private) 2 to 4 people- We will prepare a special dinner meal for your group to enjoy in our hut. 7pm - We will visit together our vegetable and tree Gardens and you will hear all about our stories of farming the local and rare varieties. You will then gather around the wooden table, to enjoy fresh, local recipes all prepared in a traditional Sifnian way. A unique way to fully experience and appreciate Sifnian food. Nero kai Alati ('Water and Salt') Restaurant - Platys Gialos If you prefer to enjoy our farm's fresh and organic produce cooked in exclusive recipes while sitting right next to the sea, then this is the place for you. In Nero kai Alati you can experience Sifnian traditional recipes fused with flavours from around the Mediterranean Sea. Booking is essential!

This is an amazing experience. Meeting George and Dina was an amazing experience and made our trip to Sifnos spectacular. George teaches and shows old time classic Sifnos recipes while Dina is the sous chef.
But in addition you get a history lecture, philosophy lessons and personal history of the Narlis family. There is an amazing farm tour and George explains dry farming which just not seem possible as it has not rained in months and he has more produce than we have ever gotten with frequent watering and high water bills in Michigan.
You also get a tour of the old homestead where the family was raised and to top it off you all sit down to a classic Sifnos dinner featuring the recipes demonstrated earlier in the tour
This is not to be missed and you can not say you have experienced Sifnos until you meet George and Dina.

We had two tours with Ronia. We walked about 2 hours to Kastro one afternoon, which was an easy walk, but full of historical and cultural information. Kastro is an exceptional town. Interesting and unique.
The second walk started early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day. We walked across the hills surrounding the Island. The walk lasted about 4 hours and it was challenging, but we saw incredible views, saw some lovely churches and smelt the aroma of lots of herbs and wonderful plants. It was tough, but we loved it. Ronia was supportive and helpful and full of interesting stories. We will come back with our Family and we hope to catch up with her then.

Argo Bar

Argo is situated at Appolonia the capital of the beautiful Island of Sifnos. The bar is housed in a classical stone built construction aged over two hundred years old. The building itself is completely refurbished and features nice and spacious internals with a touch of wood and multi level patios. Argo is open to welcome you from April to late October. Established in June 1983 Argo Bar has left its mark in Sifnos's nightlife. For almost thirty years it has been serving quality to the people visiting Sifnos; authentic cocktail recipes, fresh(cut) fruit punches, wide selection of quality spirits, beverages and liqueurs fulfil its historical menu. Classic atmosphere retained through its long history, great music, friendly service and good vibes are what make Argo Bar special for both regulars and strangers.

This bar is situated in the center of Apollonia, Sifnos. If you sit on the roof Terrace (my favourite spot) you have a very nice view of the villages of Ano petali and Apollonia. You can also see the sunset at Kamares. The drinklist is extensive and every drink is made in perfection. Because of all that expect to pay 11-12 euros per drink (prices in 2016). In my opinion the drinks is absolutely worth every cent. If your Mission is cheap drinks and you don't bother about anything else than the price, you can probably find cheaper places elsewhere. But if you want high quality in a bar choose Argo bar in Sifnos.

Ble

A trip to Sifnos is not complete unless you visit the main island city of Appolonia. Sitting in the center of the island, there is no beach, but there is a lovely avenue of shops, restaurants, bars and Terrace dining areas. For those people looking for original, locally produced island designed jewelry, BLE is a must-visit. Owned and operated by the designer proprietors, this husband and wife shop has original earrings, bracelets, necklaces, pendants, rings and more. Well priced, with loads of originality, any item at BLE is a unique keepsake or aspecial gift. The owners have their workshop on the island with a sweeping view of vistas and sea. This is where they take their inspiration for their jewelry that ranges from edgy to whimsical. Cash or credit card accepted, but paying in cash helps support this local business that is artist owned. The store caries some other select items made by local artisans such as pottery, glass, and shawls.

I visited Ble in June, 2012. This is owned by a husband-wife pair of jewelry artists. Usually one of the two is in the store. I took my time looking at all the original pieces. Most of the jewelry is designed and produced by either Spyro or Haroula, but they do carry some items from other local jewelry artists, as well as pottery from Thessoloniki. This shop is affordable, original and friendly. It sits next to a coffee shop and has loads of other jewelry stores right around it. Skip those. You are on Sifnos and everything in this shop originates here.
