Washoe Theater

Reviewed By lynnnddd - Portland

The Washoe Theater has been in continuous use since 1936 and features terrific art-deco design features and still plays current films. It has a large balcony, the original lobby woodwork, unique seating, beautiful ceiling art and awesome chandeliers. A view from the stage in front of the movie screen offers the best perspective. We met an enthusiastic Washoe volunteer and aficianado who gave us a tour of the back stage area and pointed out numerous special features; thanks for people like him who have kept this special place in near original condition.

Old Works

Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, the Old Works has been reborn on the site of Anaconda's historic century old copper smelter. The first course ever built on a Federal EPA Superfund site, Nicklaus incorporated many historic relics in his design. With its affordability, course conditioning and friendly service, Old Works is quickly building a reputation as one of the premiere, daily fee golf experiences in the Northwest region.

This golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, is not only beautiful, it is a great example of environmental management. Built on the site of a large, but shutdown copper mine and smelting operation, the land has been reclaimed and beautified in a very creative way. The sand traps are filled with black slag from the smelting - it works perfectly like sand. The old stack from the copper processing stands above the town like a monument and the little village of Anaconda is a great place to visit on your travels. The golf course has five levels of tees and can be enjoyed by golfers of all abilities!

Discovery Ski Area

Ski area that offers skiers a lot of terrain at a good price.

Reviewed By Jim S - Missoula, Montana

There are several great cross country ski trails at the Ski Area. There is a separate parking area for cross country trails before you get to the main ski parking lot. This separate parking area allows access to trails on both sides of the road. Most of the trails were groomed as we skied.

You can see the smoke stack from the main road. However, once you get there you might be a bit disappointed in that you can't hike up to it. It is a bit of a distance to view it from. The history is great and well worth your time to visit.

There is a small water fall there. It is ok but not very dramatic. Lots of locals camp there. Some not so savory. Not worth the trip. There are reported mountain goats in the area. We have never seen them in three trips. Pretty area just not dramatic for what is available in Montana

Fairmont Hot Springs Resort

We didn't stay at hotel, but have previously for family reunion. Was much cheaper to stay in Butte & drive a few minutes. Mother had massage, she enjoyed immensely! Daughter had mani, pedi on Saturday. Area was very small & disorganized. Employees rear end was hanging out the whole session despite pulling britches up many, many times & can I say needs to learn how to wipe or get clean undies. Daughter was not impressed with her mani, pedi results.. very unprofessional looking, especially for the price...avoid!!
We did enjoy the pool outside for awhile but had to evacuate due to poo in the pool...needless to say were done swimming after that...they have a slide but costs extra...booze served & snacks..pricey(suggest packing in your own) no glass allowed.

Where skiers can enjoy a winter vacation that is less expensive and less crowded.

Reviewed By Sweetandsourkiwi - Bozeman, MT

I loved this place...the tiny lodge has all the ambiance of a roller rink (shag carpet walls) and the hill has one creaky old chairlift that you can hear from the parking lot. The little hill offers a lot of fun terrain for beginners up through expert (yes, real expert terrain at a podunk hill) and a peek into olden day skiing -- no crowds (I mean NO crowds), walk 30 feet from the car to the lodge, friendly lifties, and just a really laid back groovy vibe. It's the exact opposite of a scene. We found good snow in the trees and got worked just skiing half a day -- for $20 each.

Make no mistake -- it is in no way a resort. You're not getting a massage, a hot tub, on site lodging or anything even close here. You are getting dirt-cheap skiing and lots of untracked terrain, plus the low stress of keeping track of your family on one lift.

It's not really on the way to anywhere, otherwise I would feel a little guilty sharing this secret place with the world, but I know only a few brave people will make it out of the way all the way to Maverick. It definitely needs a little boost in business to keep rolling though, I think there were maybe 20 skiers on the mountain the Sunday we were there.

Drop by, and make sure to stop at Bannack Ghost town on the way back out.
