What to do and see in Amalfi, Campania: The Best Walking Tours

February 9, 2022 Tynisha Seiler

If it's your first time visiting the Amalfi Coast, chances are you'll do a double-take the first time you see a roadside lemon stand. Yes, those are lemons, and yes, they are the size of your head. But despite their freakish appearance, you will grow to love these lemons because the locals use them to produce limoncello. And take it from us, there's nothing like a glass of limoncello as you gaze out at the sea from the balcony of your hotel in Amalfi. It's pretty much perfection.

Departure from Rome in the morning towards Salerno, where we take a ferry tour all over the splendid Coast and eventually disembark in the world-famous Amalfi. Once arrived at the port we start by taking a walk through the city streets, among the architecture beauties and the fragrance of the typical cuisine coming out of the shops, arriving eventually at our next destination: the Lemon Tour. Here, we see the famous gardens and open spaces teeming with centennial trees full of the famous Amalfi lemons then arriving at the shops where it is shown the process by which Limoncello is produced. The liquor is tasted while having lunch under the shadows of the lemon trees. The tour carries on with our last visit: the Museo della Carta (Paper Museum). Our Amalfi visit ends here and we return to Salerno and then Rome.

A shout out to our cousin Vinny and Luigi for driving us around. They both made the trip more enjoyable. Gikar was a great choice especially the 3 hour drive from Naples airport to Pisciotta.

The starting point of this small but intense Trek is Amalfi. The Valle delle Ferriere, rich in natural landscapes, owes its name to a distant past, in fact still today ironworks and ruins of medieval origin can be found. The Valley is located on the border between Amalfi and Ravello, in the middle of the Scala mountains and is crossed by the Canneto river. Along the way, you can also meet different types of animals, such as the Salamandrina terdigitata, a curious local amphibian. During the trek you can see how the Valley almost gives the impression of being in a jungle thanks to the flourishing nature, the waterfalls, the streams of water and the cool environment. It is a medium-low difficulty trek, 6.4 km long, which develops along a 3.2 km path (the same on the outward and return journeys) consisting of a steep stone staircase and a subsequent dirt mule track. The difference in height is 309 meters both uphill and downhill. There are no exposed traits.

Inclusions: TREKKING GUIDE

Exclusions: ENTRANCE FOR NATURE RESERVE and TRANSFER FROM THE HOTEL TO THE MEETING POINT

The was interesting and very well explained by our guide but a little superficial due to time constraints as we were late due to heavy traffic. Ravello is well worth the visit but the drive in and out can be a little unnerving for some. The steep and winding cliff side roads can make you feel a little insecure.
