What to do and see in Amalfi, Campania: The Best Hidden Gems Things to do

December 26, 2021 Brandee Mangan

If it's your first time visiting the Amalfi Coast, chances are you'll do a double-take the first time you see a roadside lemon stand. Yes, those are lemons, and yes, they are the size of your head. But despite their freakish appearance, you will grow to love these lemons because the locals use them to produce limoncello. And take it from us, there's nothing like a glass of limoncello as you gaze out at the sea from the balcony of your hotel in Amalfi. It's pretty much perfection.

Amalfi Musical

Every Wednesday and Saturday at 9pm, AMALFI MUSICAL tells a story set in ninth century about the rise of first Republic of Amalfi. Through the story of Antonio and Giovanna's love, thwarted by perfidious city's persecutor Sicardo, the show tells the story of Amalfi's liberation from bloodthirsty Lombard supremacy. The performance is in Italian language with surtitles in English and other languages. Reservation required.

I was wandering around the Amalfi Duomo on a Saturday and this info booth just caught my eyes with musical flyers (I'm kind of a musical fan). The lady in charge of the booth told me the show was fully booked for the night but I could come at 9pm as stand-by and probably some no-shows would turn up, and I did get a spot! I didn't even realize it was a free show until they gave me my ticket! A free musical performance provided on the Amalfi coast is indeed "epic" and thoughtful for people to get to know a bit of the history of the place in a theatric way. The music and the singing are quite good (I actually cried over some of the songs), and the tension of the acting is quite intense as well. The atmosphere is quite unique thanks to the venue that's over a millennium-old. It reminds me a bit of the new French version of Romeo & Juliet for those who have seen it, which I am a big fan of. For me personally it's absolutely an overachieving event to stumble on :)

There are so many ceramic shoes in the Amalfi region - I was told that Sorrento was the cheapest and Positano the most expensive and Amalfi was in the middle. When shopping around it was a matter of a few euros in the end. Semantics. I came here a few times before I settled on the 9 items - [see photo]. There was no pressure to buy anything here - the lady was very nice and helped when asked. The items I bought were made by a local artist as are all the items in her store. The 4 cups were E7 each = E28, the 4 shot cups were E4 each = E16 and the round try they sat on was E45. All up E89 which is about $148AU. This didn't include postage. That fee came later and was just over $100AUfor UPS which included insurance - via an email alert to pay online. They came well packaged and arrived unbroken. There is a replacement warranty if things break and she will replace them. Highly recommend this place to buy your ceramic and tiled goods.

My sister and I booked the Classic Cooking Class direct through Amalfi Lemon Experience. We were picked up in the cart near the paper factory and driven to the driveway entry to the property. The cooking class was a group class with 6 visitors total (including the 2 of us). We had such an amazing time prepping and cooking together with Ramona, the instructor, and the other guests. Spending time working together really bonds the group together and everyone stayed long after the food was cleared to talk and enjoy each others company. Lots of prosecco and wine to go around during cooking and during eating, plus limoncello, of course. The lemon farm is beautiful with an abundance of huge Amalfi lemons. The cooking lessons and the finished dishes were super! We spent the evening after the class writing notes about the preparations and now that we are home, we have prepared lemon pasta, Amalfi-style eggplant parmesan and lemon tiramisu for the rest of the family. We truly enjoyed the time spent at the class and it was definitely worth the price and was the highlight of our trip.
