What to do and see in Akumal, Quintana Roo: The Best Shopping

June 20, 2021 Vergie Nakamoto

Akumal means "Place of the Turtle" in the Mayan language, and if you snorkel here, you just might see one swimming alongside you. (Don’t touch it, though. That’s prohibited by law.) You’ll definitely see coral and beautiful fish in the clear, sparkling waters. This tourist-friendly little town is about an hour south of Cancun—but it seems light-years away.

Galeria Lamanai

Lamanai was created at the beginning of the 90's as a promotional and sales project for Mexican Folk Art in the Caribbean, from Cancun to Belize. Pre Columbian Art was originally a popular creation that had a specific social function, which has perhaps disappeared through time, yet the desire of the artists that create it lingers on. Improvisation, personality, feeling, and incredible human ability are the qualities that characterize theseartists and artisans whose roots lay in Folk Art. Throughout the years, we have been able to assemble a good working team that has allowed us to expand the original concept, and seek new horizons. In 1999 a little gallery was opened on the Caribbean shoreline, in the beautiful bay of Akumal.

We rented a golf cart for the day and had a fabulous time. They have traditional Mexican crafts and some beautiful leather purses. Prices we're reasonable for what appeared to be nice handmade items. Golf cart rentals were $40 usd per day and we cruised around the town and had a great time. Golf carts seat four and had some room for beach bags and came with a lock as well. Highly recommend!
