Ako Oishi Shrine

Reviewed By Eun Sil N - Seoul, South Korea

I visited this place about ten years ago indeed, but still this was the most memorable place for me because I was fond of the historical story 'Chushingura'.
Even the size of shrine relatively smaller than our famous shrines, the statues along the walk welcomes you and provide very calm atmosphere.

Remains of Ako Castle

Reviewed By Just-Julie-Cairns - Cairns, Australia

My main aim my last trip to Japan was to visit as many Castles as I could in the timeframe. Some of them were castle ruins and Ako Castle was on my list purely due to the story that interested me about the 47 Ronin. The Castle is really just ruins as it is stated but you can see the layout of the palace inside the walls. We did spend quite a bit of time here Reading the information about the palace layout which by the way is in Japanese only. If you are heading to Ako and want to visit the Castle ruins and also the shrine my advise is to read about the 47 Ronin so you have an idea of what happened in this area and you may appreciate the castle and the statues at the entrance of the shrine. This Castle ruin may not be for everyone but for those who are passionate about Japanese history you will find this a very interesting place to visit.

Kagakuji

Reviewed By Lara N - Takamatsu, Japan

Probably if you are not familiar with the story of the 47 Ronin, Kagakuji would be a pleasant stop on a trip to Ako. I would recommend seeing it even if you have never heard about the legendary samurai who avenged their lord then took their own lives, because the temple itself is quite pretty. However, it is a must for those who want to see the graves of the 47 heroes, located in the heart of the temple grounds. No matter what reason you choose to go, be sure to look at the giant, beautiful tiger painting on the ceiling of the main temple hall as well as strolling through the grounds and outbuildings, which hold several interesting artifacts.

Ikitsugi Ido Well

Reviewed By Lara N - Takamatsu, Japan

I didn't expect much, but we went to see this famous well as part of our visit to Ako. My 4-year-old son was fascinated with how it worked, and played with the pulley system for a long time, and even went back a few hours later. Ours was not the only child intrigued by the well. The good news is that the story is told in English as well as Japanese from a small microphone, so it is possible to learn about the history when you visit. Next to the well is a clock which plays music, opens to reveal scenes, and tells a story once an hour. Unfortunately the story is not in English, so would be hard to understand for a person who does not know the story of the 47 Ronin. However, the moving parts were again a source of wonder and delight for all the kids around. Definitely worth stopping by if you are in Ako...and all the better because it is free!

Tourist Information Center

Reviewed By Lara N - Takamatsu, Japan

I have traveled a lot in Japan, and this was one of the least friendly information centers I have stopped at. Though I speak fluent Japanese, the staff barely answered questions, only waving hands to indicate the brochures I was requesting. There are plenty of decent resources available in the center, but be prepared to find them on your own. Local English travel guides were conspicuously absent from the selection available on the counter.
