What to do and see in Ajaccio, Corsica: The Best Museums

September 11, 2021 Kelli Reichel

Ajaccio, Corsica's main city, is fun to visit at any time of year. But if you're a secret (or not-so-secret) Napoleon Bonaparte groupie, plan to be there on August 15 and join the celebration of the birthday of Ajaccio's most famous son. Casa Buonaparte, Napoleon's family home and birthplace, is worth a visit, as is the town cathedral. Or just enjoy the Corsican sun.

Musee Fesch

A small museum with a fine collection of Renaissance paintings: a must-see for the avid art lover.

This museum allegedly has the largest collection of Art outside the Louvre and is well worth a visit. It was on our "to do" list before we went. One reviewer stated it was a good place to while away an hour.We spent two and a half hours there and could have stayed longer. There was an additional exhibition of items from the Bonaparte family which was a nice suprise. Signs indicated " No photography" but luckily managed to get a book on Musee Fresch off good old ebay. Highly recommend.

Large but not very large house. Tons of exhibits to describe Napolean's life history and the history and provenance of this house. Good audio guide though it wasnt available in the morning and we had to come back after 2 pm to access it. This matter can be rectified. Wonderful bookshop extensively covering the history of Napolean and associated events. Located right in the center of Ajjacio which anyway is a walkable town

My family visited there on June 19. It’s very nice and peaceful visiting time there. It’s located near Ajaccio harbor,Madison Bonaparte and open market. It’s also free entry for tourists. It’s part of our shore excursion ‘Market and Corsican Delicacies’ from MS.Azamara Quest cruise. Recommend.
