What to do and see in Abuja, Abuja State: The Best Things to do

February 9, 2022 Concepcion Newsome

Strategically located at the crossroads of Nigeria's ethnic and religious groups, Abuja is home to the country's Presidential Branch, National Assembly and Supreme Court. The impressive Aso Rock rises majestically over the city's central government district. The diverse architecture of the city is reflected in notable sites like the National Mosque, the National Christian Centre and the National Stadium. Daily markets throughout the city offer everything from pottery to local fruits and breads.

Abuja National Mosque

Although I am a Christian and not an expert in architecture, I have a deep appreciation for Islamic architecture. This is one of the most beautiful building in Abuja and one most of my friends and family who come to visit appreciate seeing. While not as impressive as some of the Mosques I have seen in the Middle East, it is still an impressive site in the Abuja cityscape. It’s hard to miss when driving through the city centre and stands out amongst the otherwise sterile government office buildings in the city centre.

Dunes

Dunes Center is Abuja's most enduring upscale shopping location. I've been coming here for a number of years, (when it was mostly referred to as Oakland Center), and have seen it undergo many changes; all for the better. This new and improved Dunes is a 'self-contained' mega plaza and shopping extravaganza destination for just about all of your needs. Everything from designer and world renowned brands, serviced apartments, supermarket, food hall, home & office furnishings, clothing, pharmacy, luggage, fragrances, makeup, shoes, fashion accessories, casual and fancy restaurants, electronics and other miscellaneous 'accoutrements' are available at Dunes Center. I noticed a new eatery called Suya & Co by the entrance. In addition to this, there is the classy Dunes Continental Restaurant, Dunes Grill & Burger Bar, Waffle Stop, Cherry Plus Bakery and Dune Express Cafe. I've eaten at 3 of these restaurants in the past, and everything was on point. At the lower ground floor of Dunes Center, electronics, kitchen appliances, toys, Disney kids wear and entertainment items are sold. The ground floor, (main entrance floor), houses a well stocked pharmacy (Shalem Pharmacy), vibrant supermarket and Dunes Food Hall. The supermarket has everything you could possibly imagine. Everything from toiletries to home accessories to frozen food to household provisions to fresh produce to dairy, you name it- Dunes supermarket has it! The Dunes Food Hall has a wide range of international gourmet foods, including exclusive teas and unique biscuits. Dunes Avenue, (also on the ground floor) has a wide range of boutiques and small shops selling Designer Fragrances (including Arabian Oud), Watches, Sunglasses/Shades, Bags, Jewelry and so much more. The first floor of Dunes is where you can find Mens/Womens/Kids Designer wear, as well as Lingerie, Vlisco fabrics, Luggage, Bedding and numerous household items. Well known and designer brands available at Dunes include, but are not limited to Roberto Cavalli, Armani Collezioni, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, DKNY, Versace, Moschino, Swarovski, Bric's, Guzzini, Aubade, Ferrari, Cerruti, Timbaland, Canali, Valentina Sentell, LSA International, Joseph Joseph, Maison Le Jaby, Freya, Memphisto, Yves Delorme, Blu Marine, Freya, Wacoal and Porsche Design- just to name a few! The second floor houses contemporary and classic Home Furniture, (by LivingSpace), for Bedrooms, Kitchens, Living Rooms, Dining Area, Wardrobes and Walk-In Closets. On the third floor, you can find Office Furniture and Accessories, plus Kougar Solutions and Allied Services for Power Systems, Computers, Intruder Alarm Systems, etc. The fourth floor is home to the Dunes Foundation Charity Shop, a clearance area and a 'Made In Nigeria' section with traditional Nigerian Arts & Crafts, Native Wear and Ethnic, Regional Furniture. The very fancy and posh Dunes Continental Restaurant occupies the fifth floor- which is accessible only through the entrance lobby lifts/elevators.......how very exclusive! ???? The Dunes Royal Hall for conferences, special events and occasions takes up the sixth floor. So as you can see, Dunes is a truly magnificent and spectacular place to visit. Six floors of shopping, service and dining 'wonder' conveniently located on a quiet street in the heart of Nigeria's bustling capital city. It's one of my favorite go-to places in Abuja. I visit everytime I'm in town; whether it's to window shop, grab a quick bite to eat, buy yummy pastries at Cherry Plus Bakery, pick up a few groceries and other miscellaneous items. Sometimes I just like to freely roam and wander the many interesting floors in the building; that's when I have a lot of time on my hands! And the thing I love about Dunes Plaza is that it fits everu and budget. So whether you want to buy something that costs 500 naira, or 500 thousand naira- Dunes has got you covered! I encourage everyone to pay this awesome Mega Shopping Center a visit. It truly is one of 'Abuja's Gems' and your one-stop shop for dining, all of your household items, groceries, other needs and essentials. Highly, highly, highly recommended!!! ????????????????????????
