Coastal Flats

Reviewed By Malcolm K

Coastal Flats is one of the local Great American Restaurants chain with the pleasing character of the chain. Each one reliably produces tasty and appetizing dishes from a limited range special to the restaurant and which has, however, something to please everyone. Coastal Flats understandably focuses on seafood and does it well. The roasted smoked salmon filet with mustard sauce is slightly unusual and deeply satisfying; the crab cakes have large chunks of crab and taste freshly marine. For myself I am unashamedly fond of the fish fingers - not your usual breaded bricks from the freezer but, instead, lumps of lovely moist cod in a crisp and light, tempura-like, fried batter chemise accompanied by creamy, crunchy cole slaw and matchstick fries. Nowhere else comes close far less could do it better. Worth the journey for that alone. Service, as always, is attentive and ready to meet diners' requests in a nicely open room with a fascinating mural of a street in old Havana.

Had been wanting to try this place and we finally did. I ordered take out for our 18th anniversary. My wife loved the crab and my son now has a taste for friend oysters. The place has a very relaxed atmosphere and the staff were courteous and friendly. We loved all of it and are looking forward to visiting again. It is not a budget restaurant though so go prepared to pay for quality food. A dozen large blue crab and one triple combo ran $135 including tip. The satisfaction on my wife's face as she ate was well worth it.

Service was excellent starting with some explanations about their extensive menu. She was friendly, prompt and helpful. The best part of the meal was the basket of chedder biscuits brought early in the visit. We both had grilled seafood platters. Things were cooked well - nothing overcooked. My only real complaint was an abundance of grilling "butter" left at the bottom of the plate. The fries were soaking in it. It did not taste like pure butter but likely an oil/butter mix.Since we had a birthday, a nice ice cream dessert for two was brought as a surprise. No singing accompanied it, thankfully. The food was very plentiful. We took nearly half home.I would say it was a good experience.

Sushi On

Tried this with the family and enjoyed the experience. The place has sections for hot food (soups, seafood, noodle, tempura), desserts (ice cream, fruit, and cakes/pies), and cold food (sashimi, sushi, glass noodle, salads). There was quite a variety. We ended up deciding the hot food section was the best option. The desserts were nice, however the cold section fell short of expectations. We found the sushi just mediocre (good quality but meh) even though there was a huge variety.I think we will still visit but will find a smaller place to enjoy specialty sushi rolls. Price per person is $30 not including tip. The staff was great and checked on us frequently for refills and plate removal.
