Sagor Tandoori

We went here for dinner with some friends whom we were visiting. The food was actually very nice, but the two front of house staff were spending so much time on dealing with people telephoning or coming in for takeaways that service for customers in the restaurant was pretty poor. We had to ask for drinks, then ask to place our order, and clearing plates away from the table was also very slow.

Red Lantern Launceston Chinese Restaurant

We continue to enjoy this restaurant, which really has an excellent kitchen. We've tried all the other candidates both here and in Okey and none of them come close to this place's cooking. The food is more authentic; more refined & delicate than that offered elsewhere. This is particularly noticeable in their thai version of sweet & sour. Despite the name "Thai Chilli....(KingPrawn; Pork; Chicken etc)" , it isn't very spicy but it is absolutely delicious. The King Prawns are plump and juicy and the batter thin and crispy, (not those bought in puff-balls you often see). The Rendang is good too and indeed we've enjoyed everything we've tried including their substantial soups. It is best to avoid peak times on those days where "all you can eat" buffet is on; as this encorages big parties of tables and their constant ordering can overwhelm the kitchen and service suffers. However this place is so reasonably priced at all times that the buffet can easily be avoided if a quieter evening is required. For example last night we had:-Won Ton Soup plus Chicken & Sweetcorn Soup (very good) followed by:-Thai Chilli King Prawn (Excellent)Chicken Chow Mein (good)Chicken Rendang (v good)Chilli & Garlic Mixed Veg (v good)Boiled Rice2 Tiger Beers and Bottle of House White (£12-95!)All for £58! And the two of us were really stuffed.I believe the chef is Malaysian and that perhaps explains why the food is a little different and as I say a bit more refined. Don't be put off by the slightly drab decor - the restaurant provides really very good cooking indeed and we know of nothing better in the region (other than the Thai Jasmine in Exeter).

Firstly we are not generally inclined to give negative reviews or fussy about food as long as it is decent. It was Friday evening and very busy which raised my hopes in a decent take away.I was advised there would be a half hour wait so I placed the order and popped next door for a quick pint.I ordered two curries. One was the house special and the other a normal chicken. The sauce, though hot enough was very bland and lacking in spice and volume. The chicken used seemed to be pre-cooked pre packed processed as it was just mixed into the sauce and warmed through. It was pretty tasteless with no sign of the sauce adding to the flavour. There is no excuse for taking short cuts when doing the dish by adding this precooked stuff for speed. The sauce should be added as the chicken or meat is cooked so the curry flavour goes through. I do not mind that extra few minutes for things to be done properly.I have made far better Chinese curry myself. This was not cheap either. Not recommended. All places I know have these 'glitches' now and then and maybe it was one of those times.
