It seems to be a old and historic building, which could be made very characterful and unique, but it’s just a bit worn.Ate in the bar, the burgers were good enough, standard pub fare with a nice coleslaw, but served with rubbish skinny chips (McDonalds style).

The Woodman

This reliable and comfortable pub is actually at Fernham, a pretty 'vale' village about four miles from Faringdon. It is well-kept with a large bar, a double-sided open fireplace, lots of seating at tables and a small but pretty terrace garden.I've eaten lunch and dinner here, most recently in the early summer, and we've also stopped by just for a beer following a dog walk. The food is wholesome and hearty and although not particularly exotic, is freshly prepared and thoughtfully presented. There's a fairly good choice of wine and even better of cask beers. Good euro lager on tap too. Service is pleasant and prompt. As with other personal favourites 'south of the A420' the Woodman is happily under no illusion that it is 'in the Cotswolds' and instead of trying to be hip it sensibly sticks to doing a great job of being a really great local pub for (frequently) local people.Bar open at usual times (see website). Lunch and dinner, monthly cinema showings with dinner (how cool is that?!), dogs welcome, innovative complimentary minibus service for groups, big car park at rear, cards accepted. Lunch for two, with wine, about £60. Bookings not always required but recommended for weekends.

I have been two weekends on the trot to TJ's, first by myself and the second with the family. I hate to say, I had the mega breakfast on both occasions (don't tell my doctor!). The food is cooked fresh and the quality of food is outstanding. A proper fry up the way it should be!

The Bell Hotel Restaurant

We went to The Bell for lunch on Saturday and had the burger. It wasn't the greatest burger but the chips were great. Ketchup portions were tiny! The cheese and bacon (additional £3) unfortunately added nothing to the flavour. We ordered desserts (brownie and cheesecake) and had to send the brownie back as the plate was dirty from previous use. We had a slight issue when we went to settle the bill. They charged us the evening prices (£14.50) rather than the lunch price (£10) which we had to point out to get amended. The barman (Charlie) who served us at the bar was friendly. The waiter seemed a little bit stressed and didn't check on the food shortly after serving. Not sure that we would go back at over £40 for a lunch for two.

I’m walking the Thames Path from the source of the River near Kemble to Oxford. I selected The Trout at Tadpole Bridge because I didn’t want to walk from Lechlade to Newbridge in one day (I’m old and take my time). I’m very glad I stopped here. Wonderful greeting on arrival, delightful garden area next to the Thames, some good ales, a large, clean room and bathroom (Hen’s Hackle was the room name), a superb meal, and an equally superb breakfast this morning.Every staff member was cheerful. The common areas and the restaurant were spotlessly clean. And, again, the food was excellent. All in all, I’m guessing this will be the top spot during my five overnight stays.

We were staying on a Secret Escapes Dinner Bed & Breakfast package which meant we had a £25 per person credit towards our evening meal, which sounds plentiful to me...............but Our table for two was booked on a Saturday evening (snowy weather) at 7.30pm, we were greeted and given a choice of tables. The restaurant had a good atmosphere, with the cooking taking place in the integrated kitchen, which helped with lovely cooking smells. A part of our package I chose a glass of Prosecco & Hubbie had a beer. The menu was not extensive and we found out after that we should have been offered a set menu option also, but were not. I chose a Calamari starter and we both chose the steak which was quite pricey @ £29 each. The Calamari was very good, although the squid ink mayo looked very dodgy and did not have much flavour. The steaks were cooked to perfection with triple cooked chunky chips. However, the portion sizes were fine for me, but Hubbie came away still hungry. Both felt it was "nice" but overpriced.Dear JacquelineH, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I am sorry to hear that your restaurant experience did not live up to expectation, I would have expected our front of house team to explain the Menu's to you correctly. If you are ever in the area again, please do consider us for a lunch / dinner stop. If you contact myself directly to make the booking I shall certainly make sure something is done in the way of compensation for you for your previous experiences. My email is - [email protected]. Kind regards, JackS

A beautiful old building full of character. A super varied menu for us to choose from. Our young waitress was friendly and polite. We had Indonesian soup to share a BLT and Brie on toast with walnuts and Honey. Very happy with our food. Only downside was we felt waiting a half an hour for our food was a little long.

We visited on a pub quiz night and had a meal with friends before the quiz. Pretty good service and food to match - I had the Scampi and chips, OK not very imaginative but it's what I wanted and to be honest it was as good as it gets. The chips were served in their own container, which worked well for finger eating and dipping in Mayo. Their home made ice cream is excellent and once you see the desert menu, you'll want it all.The have ample parking which these days is really important - you don't want to be traipsing half a mile to get a bite to eat or a drink with friends. The quiz was well run and fun - will we go back - for sure, yes

The menu was ok if a little pricey. The service was friendly, not rushed and helpful. (But might have been less so if there had been more diners) The food was niceley presented, well cooked and appetising. What really spoiled the occasion was that mayonnaise requested was served in a plastiic manufacturer's bottle and appeared on the bill at a charge of £2. Condiments are in our experience included in the meal price and mayonnaise is served in a dish. Halloumi cheese advertised with salad (garnish?) was served with a full side salad, not consciously ordered, at a charge of £3.50. So when the card payment machine requested a tip we declined as we felt we had overcharged.

We went here for a Birthday dinner and the 4 of us ate the 2/3 course a la carte menu. The tuna was superb, my wife described the scallop dish as one of the best starters she has ever had (she's had thousands). The beef was excellent, but the duck was so tender and melt-in-the-mouth. Superb.Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Restaurant 56. We're glad the meal was enjoyed by all and hope to welcome you back soon!
