The Lost Spring

We absolutely loved our time at The Lost Spring! Very relaxing soaking in the various hot volcanic spring water rockpools, walking along the narrow paths in the lush Gardens mades it even more relaxing and like on a little adventure seeing where the paths go. There are caves to swim through, lined with beautiful natural crystal structures, and you can lay and rest on day lounges and the friendly staff will bring your drinks and food orders. There is also a spa you can get massages and a restaurant overlooking the main pool. We found the facilities clean and well maintained. There is wifi if you need to access internet or need to access your business files etc. Highly recommend.

Parked at Flaxmill Bay, walked over the beach and up through the bush, following an easy path to the view point. It took about 30 mins and the views were brilliant. We then walked down to Lonely Bay and after sitting for 30mins, headed back to Flaxmill. Overall it took about 2 hours including stops.
I would strongly recommend this easy walk.

We spent 3 hours with 4 children ranging in age from 5 to 12 years old. I just asked them again, and they really liked the farm. The reason I asked them is because I don’t trust my own judgment on this - it IS a kids attraction. The farm seems to be a family run small business that rather than be a slick, polished tourist spot, they embrace shabby chic and rust. There are typical NZ farm animals to interact with, plenty of antique farm machinery to look at and climb on and a pretty nice playground that the whole family can enjoy. The farms walke a fine line between being charming and being run-down for me, but the kids liked it- what more can I say?

We arrived at 6pm to find the wine tasting finished at 5pm. The restaurant offers pizzas till a little later.
The pizzas were pretty good.
There aren’t any really spectacular views and as wineries go, there’s so many better ones in NZ so don’t go out your way to visit this one!

What a joke. To get there you have to go about 4kms over a pot holed crappy shingle road with more corrugations than my shed roof has. We were in a 7m motorhome. The driveway entrance is so overgrown with low hanging trees it scratched all the top of the bus getting up it. Once there we only got to find the place wasnt open. A button saying to ring the bell which we did several times but nobody came out. So we headed back over the same aweful road and about 3kms towards Whitianga found the Whiti Farm Park. Nice friendly staff and great park.

Short hike up the hill and out on the historic Maori pa. It is covered with trees now with a winding pathway leading all the way to the sheer drop off at the end. Stone steps have been built and some are quite steep. The sides drop down to the Back Bay and the Whitianga Harbour. There is a sign showing how the pa looked when Cook landed, where another path takes you down to the Back Bay. From there, you can continue to hike up the hill on the Maramaratotara track with stunning view of Shakespeare Cliff and Flaxmill Bay.
