Gaisalm

Reviewed By Paul M - Purley, Surrey

We walked from Pertisau to Achenkirch, stopping for a drink in the hut at Gaisalm. The walk is well worth doing, but requires reasonable fitness and, at times, a head for heights. The Alm is pretty much what you would expect - a self service cafe with quite pricey food and drinks. It is in a great location and is a nice place to stop before continuing the walk to Achenkirch.

Vitalberg - Steinol Museum

This is a small museum describing how is mineral oil made from the stones ( something like "oilstones" ) - the exhibition is small, detailed, without human guide, it is fully electronic. There is of course a shop offering products with this oil and caffeteria ( in my opinion the best espresso in Pertisau )...

Unusual gondola for Austria 5 cars together unlike the single gondola great ride to top this mountain is not very high so a short trip, nice alm at the top serving lunch try there kaiser schmarin pancakes, great views of the lake with photos a plenty there are plenty of walks to suit all tastes from easy to hard walks back down to Pertisau all well marked one thing I love about Austria is the yellow signs telling you where to go and how long it will take you and there always right, its part of the Achensee card and guest card for reduced cost.

Achenseeschiffahrt

We did a boat tour round the Achensee starting and ending at Pertisau. The cruise took about two hours and stopped at a number of places around the lake. The views are impressive and the trip was very relaxing. There are plenty of indoor and outdoor seats on board with food and drink for sale. We had brought our own sandwiches on board but found signs all over the ship saying that consumption of your own food and drink was not allowed - I think this is a bit unnecessary.

We came to the ski school as novices in cross country skiing and snowshoeing but left much more confident.
We can't fault their patience and good humour when dealing with us despite some language problems.
The skiing areas, downhill and cross country, were immaculately prepared, the hire kit was clean and in good condition and the surrounding countryside for snowshoeing was wonderfully scenic.
If you can obtain the services of Christian or Doris you will have struck gold.
Highly recommended.

This small church is extremely beautiful. It was built in the mid 1960's using plans by the famous Austrian architect Clemens Holzmeister. It is famous for the bells ringing out Ave Maria each day at 12.00 and 18.00. It is wonderful to find a church unlocked.

Sport Leithner Bicycle Rental

More than 11x2 kms for the bike trail (go and back from Pertisau to Achenrich) of very nice views: green water, Beaches, nice stops to have lunch or picnic, etc. You will need 3-4 hours at least if you go with kids. Advice: be careful because the trail is narrow and there is much people in a sunny summer day. The lake, one of the best places we have ever visited!
