One of Georgia’s true treasures, Georgia Veteran’s State Park was established in 1946 as a memorial to U.S. veterans. This beautiful 1,308 acre park pays tribute to veterans from the Revolutionary War through the present day. The Park operates under the theme, “Serve the Living: Honor our Heroic Dead. Easily accessible from I-75 (via Exit 101 and west on Highway 280) in Cordele, GA, the park features the picture-perfect Lake Blackshear, an array of recreational activities and its signature Military Museum with engaging indoor exhibits, as well as outdoor static displays including: a B-29A Superfortress, jets, a helicopter, tanks, landing craft and artillery. Refresh your spirit with a walk on the four miles of nature trails, or gather the family and enjoy a lakeside picnic and a swim from the sandy beach. The classic Southern lake is also perfect for fishing and boating, while the 18-hole Denis Griffith’s designed course provides golfers with a challenging day.
My favorite part of the park is that you can ride the SAM shortline train from the park. The park has a lodge, villas, cabins, and a camping area. We stayed in the villas and they were much nicer than I expected! The visitor center has a museum dedicated to veterans, featuring weapons and uniforms from various wars and much more. Outside, there is an area that features military planes, tanks, and big guns. A bit further in the park is a memorial to the veterans. The park has two restaurants, but only one is open because of covid. You can bring your RC plane to the park to fly, as well as go boating, fishing, and hiking. I will definitely be coming back to this park!

There are different routes for different days, so check to see what the route will be for your trip. There are also four different levels of ticket price, from your basic coach seating to the Chairman's class. It is a restored 1925 Pullman car, and you can even sit outside the back of the train! We sat in the deluxe seating car Americus, but I would go back again just for the Chairman's class railroad car. There is a food car that supplies drinks and snacks, burgers, and hot dogs. The views aren't anything spectacular, but my favorite part was going over Lake Blackshear. Beyond that, your view is of towns, fields, and forests. The stations along the route are Cordele, Georgia Veterans State Park, Leslie, Americus, Plains, and Archery. There is nothing to see in downtown Cordele. Most of the businesses are near I-75 and the downtown is pretty much a ghost town. We were staying at Georgia Veterans State Park and got on the train there. I highly recommend a stay at the resort in the state park! Leslie is barely a town, and you can see buildings that are literally falling apart. Americus is a larger town, alive, and seems to be doing well. Plains is a small town that looks forward to the business the train provides. We left with several purchases from Plains. Archery isn't much of a town, just the boyhood home of former President Jimmy Carter. I would like to note that not all trains go the entire length of the route. Ours only went from the state park to Plains. The train will pick up people at the other two stations, but does not stop there. Basically it is a trip from point A to point B, picking people up along the way. If no one is getting on, the train continues, but it does not stop to let anyone off until point B is reached.

We stopped here on our way to Florida. We enjoyed the villa and its view of the water. We had a rainy start but we were able to play golf. The course was fun and had its share of sand and challenging holes. We would like to come back when it’s warmer and try the course again.

This is in a gas station parking lot at the Cordele exit. It is worth a few extra minutes to see and read the plaque at this site.
