Being a very revered Shaktipeeth, money plays its part here. The approach lane to the temple is lined with shops run by the priests of the temple who sell all the items needed for puja. Also, apart from the general queue, there is a VIP queue, they charge Rs. 500 each (you must bargain) which gets your to the sanctum sanctorum a lot quicker. Photography of the idol is prohibited but if you request your priest in advance, he will get you few extra minutes to click.

In the lap of nature, it is unique in its nature. The frescoes on the walls of various departments in the Ashram area are worth visiting. The glass temple, the chhatimtala, the amra kunja, the bakul bithi and the kala bhavan Sangit bhavan area have an old world charm where the inmates lived in perfect harmony with nature, self, and the artistic surrounding.

Rabindra Bhavan

The experience of visiting Rabindra Bhavan is quite different compared to visiting any other museum. It’s due to the range of emotions that one feels inside the museum. Reverence for his persona, Pride about the great Indian Nobel Laureate , Amazement about his genius. Rabindra Bhavan was his residence when Rabindranath lived in Shantiniketan. It has been converted into a museum. There are many things about the museum that will stay with you in memory. Nobel committee’s speech at the time of the award ceremony, Rabindranath’s acceptance speech, the Nobel award citation, pictures of other great personalities who became his admirers, friends. The story about how Gitanjali was first published and how it took the world by storm. How he first heard the news of his receiving the award. Gitanjali is a compilation of 157 poems. 68 of them were songs. He was a rare person whose poetry had a music in it.. The museum shows many pictures and some of the memorabilia. It is a sheer joy and an exciting experience to have visited the museum. It should be #1 place to visit while in Shantiniketan..

The Kankalitala Temple

The place is one of the most sacred places I have visited in India. But another reason to remember it is Babu Chatterjee. We visited during winter so my mother had a coat on her. Before entering the temple we left the shoes and coat at his stall. When we came out and boarded the toto to return in half way we realized we forgot the coat. We thought of returning back to the stall. Suddenly we saw a bike approaching calling out for us, it was Babu Chatterjee Stall number 10 he came all the way on his bike searching for us to return the coat. It felt so wonderful that such honest people still exist.
