We took a NS Sprinter train to go to Zaanse Schans (Zaandam Kogerveld station) from the Schiphol airport station. The services are very efficient, the trains are pretty clean and punctual. As a rail fan, I liked those trains in particular. The ticketing system is also very simple. If you have an OV-Chipkaart, that can be used both in NS and GVB services. Though for NS services, you have to maintain a balance of 20 EUR.

We had over 7hrs to kill before our flight so scoured the airport for things to do, we stumbled upon the Panorama Terrace. It was brilliant a huge space that even had an empty disused aircraft for you to board and look around. It was very windy and cold there but would imagine in the summer would be a lovely place to sit and watch the daily goings on of the airport. They are doing works to this area and when these are complete the place will be a great place to visit. They are building a new bar and restaurant which will be a great place to chill in the summer. There are picnic tables and seating areas so you can bring your own food or takeaway food from the airport outlets. I wish we still had something like this at our local airport in the UK, its great place to kill time.

Let us take you behind the scenes of the biggest airport of the Netherlands. The Schiphol Experience is a bus tour that shows you all the secrets of the airport. How does the fire department operate? What does a hangar look like from up close? What happens when it snows? All these questions will be answered during the Schiphol Experience. You’ll also get a look back into history, with a guide on the bus telling you all about the beginnings and the first ever flight that took off at the airport. You will also learn about the biggest mystery of all: where does that unpronounceable name ‘Schiphol’ come from?
