Top 8 Things to do in Portimao, Portugal

March 28, 2018 Elouise Mccaul

Portimao is a sailor’s delight, thanks to its calm waters and beautiful conditions. Plenty of elite international competitions happen here, but you don’t have to be a professional to set sail. Cruising the coast on the double-masted Santa Bernarda pirate ship is a family favorite. On dry land, you can wander the lovely Alvor boardwalk, enjoy a succulent seafood meal or zip around the go-kart track at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve.

Praia de Alvor

Nice beach during the day but can get very crowded on the streets at night. A lot of hills and very difficult to traverse with a buggy especially when constantly being stopped by street vendors. Great selection of bars and restaurants tho and the views over the hardour at night are breathtaking. Has its flaws but it is very vibrant and fun and well worth a visit, even just for a day. Parking is a nightmare tho so be prepared!

Praia Da Rocha

Beautiful long beach for walks and swimming, connected with many other Beaches with stone sculptures made by nature. I don't recommend it during the summer because it is overloaded with tourists, but the rest of the year is the paradise. If you're lucky you can even swim in October.

The best beach in the Portimao area, without doubt! there are amazing rock formations, with caves and tunnels underneath.
The view from the look-out on the Promenade is stunning and there are many restaurants where you can eat over the cliffs, you can see across to Portimao harbour and marina, Simply stunning!

With gales hitting the area we visited the museum in an airy building. No English translation in most places but good video with subtitles. You can see the room where the sardines were dealt with. Best bit was eating sardines nearby afterwards. Amazingly no museum shop selling sardine cans!

Autodromo Internacional do Algarve

you certainly cant rent these Karts in the USA because of the liability potential, so you gotta check this place out. the 4 stroke carts are fun too, as they go about 45 mph, but the two stroke karts have a lot more tork and hit about 70 mph. The track is in pretty good shape too. Both are a gas. I think the 4 stroke karts were about 45.euros for 15 minutes. I think the 2 stroke carts were 75 euros for 10 minutes and requires a 200 euor deposit. The deposit can be used for more than one cart. Oh, they clear the track for the two stroke Karts, so the 4 stroke Karts to get in the way too.
But the main track is used for Formula 1 and LeMan's races too. Its an awsome track. There is a monolity hotel on the hill that has an ATM so you can get your deposit cash if you need too.

Church of Misericordia of Alvor

This beautiful little church is well worth a visit. It is 500yrs old and just had some renovation work completed on the altar and side altar. It is not far off the normal tourist area so not a problem to get to. While you're there you may want to make a donation to the works been carried, I believe it cost around 40,000 euros.

Vau Beach

Reviewed By chickandbeast - Durham, Canada

Vau Beach is walkable with golden sands and great scenic views, within walking distance of Vitor's Plaza, down hill to get there up hill back.
Quieter than some of the other Beaches, very natural only a little graffitti on the cliffs face.
You can find free parking nearby it just might take some perseverance.
