Nakhon Si Thammarat (Thai: นครศรีธรรมราช, pronounced [ná(ʔ).kʰɔ̄ːn sǐː tʰām.mā.râːt]; from Pali Nagara Sri Dhammaraja) is a city (thesaban nakhon) in southern Thailand, capital of the Nakhon Si Thammarat Province and the Nakhon Si Thammarat District. It is about 610 km (380 mi) south of Bangkok, on the east coast of the Malay Peninsula. The city was the administrative center of southern Thailand during most of its history. Originally a coastal city, silting moved the coastline away from the city. The city has a much larger north to south extension than west to east, which dates back to its original location on a flood-save dune. The modern city centre on the train station is north of Old Town. As of 2005, the city had a population of 105,417.

Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan is probably the holiest Wat in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The main stupa of the Wat, Phra Borommathat Chedi is claimed to house a piece of Lord Buddha's relic. Built by King Sri Dhammasokaraja in the early 13th century CE, it is the holiest structure in the wat . Unfortunately, we do not have the privilege to see the relic. Never less, the inner Stupa building houses some other very unique holy statues and relics. I swear I felt very blessed when in the building.
The main stupa exterior is currently undergoing renovations with scaffolding cladding the structure. Nonetheless, It is still an awesome sight with other smaller stupa surrounding it .
A note about this Wat compared to other Wats in Thailand, it is devoid of stalls selling Thai amulets. I was looking forward to get some holy amulets ..

The Museum has been open for about 43 years-- and was built on an ancient Buddhist temple grounds! It has, as its "centrepiece" a very old statue-- about 1,200 years old-- of the Indian deity Vishnu. This Statue indicates -historically- the extent to which Southern Indian influences existed in Southern Thailand!!

Like Chiang Mai [in the north of Thailand] there are interesting (and meticulously restored) remnants of the historical town wall. The size of the wall gives some notion of the town's size and importance many hundreds of years ago!! Students of history as well as those interested in walled cities [in Asia and Europe] would also be very pleased to have paid it a visit!!

If you have half and hour or so to spare and you are in the vicinity of Wat Phra Mahathat,it's worth crossing over the road and visiting Baan Tan Khun. This house has been well restored and conserved and is traditional Thai style architecture at its best.
It doesn't take that long to walk around but the furniture has some exquisite detail and is worth a close look. There are a number of fascinating old photographs hanging on the walls. It's light and airy with an interesting history.
There's no charge for admission.

The city of Nakhon Si Thammarat is a "TRUE TREASURE" considerably l off the "well beaten" tourist map!! In addition to the substantial military presence, there are many Buddhist temples. But this Chedi is surprisingly large and draws attention to the skills of the ancient architectural and engineering skills developed!! Well worth a visit!!

วัดร่อนนา หรืออีกชื่อที่คนส่วนใหญ่คุ้นเคย คือวัดแม่เศรษฐี ซึ่งเป็นวัดโบราณครั้งแต่สมัยยุคกรุงศรีอยุธยา ซึ่งสันนิษฐานว่าในอดีตเคยเป็นวัดที่รุ่งเรืองแห่งนึงเลยทีเดียว จากหลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์ พระพุทธรูปปางอุ้มบาตร สูง1.7เมตร
ประวัติที่เล่าขานกันมาว่าย้อนไปเมื่อ700-800ปี มีครอบครัวเศรษฐีกรงมาศ ที่หลบหนีลี้ภัยจากการปล้นสดมภ์ลงมายังดินแดนใต้ และได้ตั้งรกรากตั้งแต่นั้นมา และได้ถือกำเนิด บุตรี 1คน ซึ่งเลี้ยงดู ทะนุถนอม ด้วยความรัก เป็นอย่างดี จนเมื่อนางเข้าย่างสู่อายุ 16ปี ได้พากันไปเที่ยวน้ำตก พร้อมกับพี่เลี้ยง กันอย่างสนุกสนาน แต่เหตุการณ์ที่ไม่คาดฝัน ทำให้นางและพี่เลี้ยงลื่นตกสู่ธารน้ำตกและสูญหาย จึงนำความไปแจ้ง เศรษฐีกรงมาศ
ด้วยความรักต่อบุตรสาว จึงประกาศให้รางวัลแก่คนที่ตามหาร่างบุตรสาวตนพบ มีเงินรางวัลเป็นทองคำ ร้อยชั่ง ชาวบ้านต่างพากันงมหาร่างที่สูญหายแทบพลิกแผ่นดิน แต่ก็ไม่พบ ยิ่งทำให้เศรษฐีและเศรษฐีณีกรงมาศเศร้าโศก จึงคิดสร้างรูปปั้นบุตรสาวและพี่เลี้ยง เหล่าช่างต่างๆลงแรงปั้นออกมาเท่าไหร่ก็ไม่เหมือนและไม่สวยงาม เพราะขาดความชำนาญ จนเรื่องนี้ดังไปจนถึงสรวงสววรค์ พระอินทร์จึงตรัสให้พระวิษณุกรรมลงมาทำให้สำเร็จ จึงแปลงกายเป็นพราหมณ์เฒ่า ใช้ทองทั้งหมดหล่อขึ้นรูปออกมาเป็นพระพุทธรูปอย่างสวยงามวิจิตร
ดังนั้น ครอบครัวเศรษฐีกรงลาศจึงตั้งจิตอธิฐาน ที่จะลอยพระพุทธรูปนี้ไปตามแม่น้ำ หากแต่ร่างของบุตรสาวเสียชีวิต และอยู่ที่แห่งหนตำบลใด ก็ขอให้ระพุทธรูปนี้จงได้ตั้งอยู่ที่แห่งนั้น จนลอยมาติดที่วัดคีรีวงค์ หรือวัดร่อนนาปัจจุบัน จนวันหนึ่งมีเด็กเลี้ยงควาย เห็นเศียรพระโผล่จากดิน แต่คิดว่าคือตอไม้ จึงน้ำเชือกไปผูกวัวไว้ ตกค่ำมีอาการปวดท้องอย่างหนัก ชาวบ้านที่มาพบจึงต่างพากันช่วยดึงขึ้นให้พ้นดิน หากแต่ทำทำไหร่ก็ไม่เป็นผล ต่อมาเด็กเลี้ยงควายมีอาการสั่นเทาและพูดว่าต้องการให้พระสงฆ์มานิมนตร์ขึ้นมา จึงทำตามและสามารถนำท่านขึ้นมาอย่างน้ามหัศจรรย์ จึงเป็นตำนานเล่าขานสืบต่อกันมาจวบจนปัจจุบัน
วัดร่อนนา ตั้งอยู่หมู่ที่2 อำเภอ ร่อนพิบูลย์ หากขับมาบนถนน พหลโยธิน ให้เลี้ยงเข้ามาทางฝั่ง สถานีตำรวจ ร่อนพิบูลย์ ตรงเข้ามาประมาณ เกือบ2กิโล ให้เลี้ยวซ้ายเข้าสู่หมู่บ้าน ร่อนนา ขับตรงมาจนสุดทางจะพบกับวัดตั้งอยู่
ที่นี่เปิดให้คนเข้านมัสการการองค์แม่เศรษฐีตั้งแต่เวลา 6:00-18:00น ของทุกวัน คนส่วนใหญ่นิยมมากราบไหว้ขอพรให้เกิดความสิริมงคลแก่ครอบครัว และยังมีคนมาขอลูกกับแม่เศรษฐีและสมหวังดังปรารถนาไปแล้วมากมาย หากใครสมหวังมักจะนำรูปถ่ายเด็กๆมาถวายให้เป็นลูกของเจ้าแม่อีกด้วย
หากท่านได้แวะเวียนมาเที่ยว นครศรีธรรมราช วันร่อนนา คืออีกหนึ่งวัดที่ท่านจะแวะมากราบสัการะค่ะ
