Stora Alvaret

Reviewed By Valeria M - Turin, Italy

Stora Alvaret means "the Great Alvar" is a limestone barren plain and is the typical agricultural landscape of Southern Öland (the long and narrow island in the South-East of Sweden, in front of the city of Kalmar).
For its particular ecosystem, Stora Alvaret has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Indeed, it is the habitat of numerous rare and endangered wildflowers and other plants, both mediterranean and polar species!
Because of the conformation of the island of Öland, it is possible to easily cross the Stora Alvaret for its entire width, since there are several paved roads ... even by bike, cycling for more or less 10 km, as I did! :)

A larger and more extensive burial ground from the Bronze Age and Viking which is situated in a landscape that seems unaltered during the more than a thousand years as the site has been inhabited. The proximity to the sea and the beautiful but harsh nature out on the 'Alvar' reinforces the feeling of 'Nordic originality'. Stay up for a long while and breathe in the history of all spirits ...

J.A.G.S. Museum

Reviewed By disillusion20 - Singapore

Visited this museum as part of a trip down the south of Oland and it was one of the most interesting art museum that I have ever seen. There was a small entrance fee that you have to pay and you can loan their guidebooks (available in Swedish and English, free!) to find out more about the history of the place as well as the various artworks in the exhibit.
When we were there, there was also a very friendly old man who spent time explaining to us what each piece of artwork was (though only my husband could understand as the guide only spoke Swedish).
If you get hungry, there is also a cafe next to the museum for a spot of 'fika' before travelling on. All in all, a very interesting place that I would recommend checking out.

Tager man Øland rundt, er det et meget hyggeligt stop lige at se kirken på vejen. Den er som Vestkystens kirker lidt bar, ikke mange krummelyrer. Det er et fint kirkeskib.

Magnificent site to go for a walk or visit the ruined fort that dates back to the 5th century.
Bårby has been a significant historical site for many centuries. It is located on the ridge of the Mörbylånga dalen and offers a spectacular view of the valley and the sea between Öland and the Mainland. It is also possible to descend below the ridge and walk along (and under) the limestone overhangings.

Morbylanga Kyrka

Reviewed By Trehar - Bergen, Norway
