The Channels Natural Area Preserve

Reviewed By jmpncsu - Raleigh, North Carolina

The Channels are sandstone outcrops on Clinch Mountain Ridge that have been worn down by 400 million years of erosion to form large crevasses just large enough for an adult to walk through. They're located in The Channels Natural Area Preserve, which is part of Channels State Forest. The easiest access is from the Brumley Mountain Trailhead on VA-80 at Hayters Gap. The trail is a gated road most of the way, so pretty easy, but it's about 3.5 miles one way and its all uphill to the Channels, gaining about 1000 vertical feet over the 3.5 miles. Near the end, a well-marked spur trail leads up to the summit where there's an old lookout tower. Just before the tower, a path cuts to the left - this leads to "The Hidden Channels". The crevasses are smaller and I couldn't find a way in, but the views from the top are great. We had lunch up here and no one else was here, while the Channels were packed. The lookout tower is unsafe and closed to climbing. Just past that are the Channels. It's kind of a labyrinth, but the crevasses form a grid so it would be hard to get lost. Besides being really fun to explore, it's also significantly cooler in the Channels - a welcome relief after a hot, muggy hike up the mountain.

Reddish Knob

About 1/2 hour or so out of Dayton, up some very windy and narrow roads. But totally worth it when you arrive at the top. Gorgeous views. Apparently a lot of kids go up there to party as there was extensive (and some offensive) graffiti everywhere, some dating back a decade or more, so whoever is responsible for the area apparently does not paint it over with any frequency. It was a detraction, but the view still transcended it.

We saw hiking trails also, but had no maps or knowledge as to whether they were marked, so we stuck to the road.

Big Cedar Creek Falls

Reviewed By Preston B - Virginia

The falls are a 1.5 mule walk. The trail is a road so it is very easy walking. In years past, vehicles could drive to the falls. We took a picnic lunch and ate on the rocks. There is a shelter and outhouse styke bathrooms .3 miles from the falls. The only negative was I got stung two times by waspers crossing the swinging bridge at the very beginning. No ones fault. If youbare allergic to bees make sure you have your epi-pen.

Well worth a visit! This was our 3rd visit. We took with us a 92 year old friend who wanted to "taste a little wine." Hey, at 92 whatever she wants, she gets! The owner's wife was courteous and informative. And the wine was excellent. Shop the store, walk through the vineyard.

White's Mill

Reviewed By bwodom - South Carolina

This is about 5 miles out of town, but a nice drive. There is the mill itself which is on the National Historic Register. It is interesting to look around, but looks pretty much like other mills we have visited. I am sure the structure has been assessed but be careful inside -- lots of uneven floors and creaky stairs. There is a nice little swing on the porch to just enjoy the countryside for awhile.

Across from the mill is an old "mercantile" which is an eclectic mix of local goods (jams, relishes, handcrafts, etc.) and flea-market type goods. We were told that the goods inside were from local consignors. The mill and store are owned by a local nonprofit.

If you have some extra time to kill (we had tickets later that afternoon for the theater and had already checked out of our hotel), then this will nicely fill in the gap. Not sure if I would make a special trip for it though.

I visited Heartwood over the Thanksgiving Holiday. It is a beautiful facility filled with art pieces from the Southwest Virginia region. The food is incredibly good, and the staff is beyond wonderful, going out of their way to help you or provide more information. The prices of the art work is what you would expect to spend at a fine art store. Very lovely place.
