The story of Michael Davitt is the story of Irelands history from the 1840's famine through armed and eventually civil resistance centred on a man who from humble Mayo roots became a British MP and human rights activist. An extraordinary story told by guides who care passionately for this period of history.
Superb museum and they even treated us to tea and coffee.
It's a free entry museum but please make a donation.

Foxford (and the surrounding County Mayo area in which we enjoyed a return fall week) is rich with natural beauty serving as an excellent area base, with the Mills Visitor centre a most satisfying mid day stop. Here it's possible to up close witness the transition process from raw wool etc to quality product. There aren't many classic deep bargains be found but that's also rarely the case with such consistently high skills standards and time consuming quality of production. Still we took advantage of a few very good deal options.
Engaging the Oxford Woolen Mills feels a bit like stepping back in time and is physically impressive in size and variety covering two floors offering extensive variety. We actually returned twice to enjoy delicious good value lunches presented with very creative and inventive flair. Such a find is still somewhat rare relative to Ireland cuisine, especially in the context of an affordable uncomplicated self service (seeing the amazing choices can be helpful) midday meal.

Visited during the recent Rugby World Cup, when the bar was packed. Every customer, young and old were drinking pints of Guinness. Pat, the owner showed us into the 'lounge', which was like the front room of a house, where we all had the best pint we've ever had. The kegs were stored directly below the taps on the bar. It was so good, it's difficult to describe. Highly recommended for anyone passing through Foxford.

Murder Mystery Ireland

Murder Mystery Ireland is a fun way of breaking the ice be it a Hen Party, Birthday, Group get-together or perhaps a corporate event! Everyone becomes a character and has their own mystery to solve as well as the mystery of who committed the murder.Worried about some shy guests? There’s no need, as the game will be set based on your group, i.e. shy guests will be given smaller parts whereas the

Myself, my husband and another couple attended a "mixed event" in Castlebar. The remaining Participants were another couple and a group of ladies celebrating a 40th birthday. We were accommodated in The Harlequin Hotel which is a bright, modern hotel - breakfast was of good quality and plentiful. We didn't have other meals in the hotel so can't comment on those. The event was extremely professionally run and everything went smoothly. Olivia from the Company was in regular contact before the event to ensure we were kept up-to-date. Our costumes were waiting for us at the hotel on arrival and a bus transferred us to and from the event on the Saturday. Special mention must go to Brendan, our Facilitator who remained good-humoured for the duration of the event (from 5pm until 9.30 p.m. on the Saturday) and who really helped keep the atmosphere going and moved events along. We received a drink of wine on arrival and a meal during the event which was of good quality with a nice choice of food. The only downside to the event was, I felt, the room where it was held. In my opinion the room was not big enough to cater for all Participants comfortably, and you were left feeling a little claustraphobic after being in the room for hours. All Participants mixed well and indeed we all availed of the option to continue the night as a group once the event had finished by going to a local Public House where Brendan had reserved tables for us and where there was a band playing. Overall I would highly recommend this experience for a weekend away with a difference.

Lough Callow Loop

Reviewed By Kesh_grammy - Western Ireland, Ireland

Lough Callow Loop, Lough Callow, Co. Mayo, is situated off the N26 between the towns of Foxford and Swinford. Having walked/hiked a number of Mayo Walks in County Mayo, I checked out the site for a upcoming extended stay in Swinford, which is located about ten minutes from the Lough Callow loop parking area. The Gateway Hotel staff kindly printed off the Lough Callow Loop, Mayo Walks info sheet, & a map of the loop, and, on a beautiful Early March day, off I set for my hike of Lough Callow. I parked in the designated area, noting one other vehicle, left the note on the dashboard, prepared my pack, cell phone, water, snack, camera & safety vest secured, and off I started, within 5 minutes the sky darkened, the wind picked up, and, by the time I returned to the vehicle, I was drenched, quickly ending my planned hike for that day.
Less than a week later, I returned to Lough Callow, I noted a bit more leafing, a bunny munching on a tender plant, don't forget your binoculars, birds abound the area & trail. I am glad I wore hiking boots w/ankle support, as a few mucky & unstable path areas are noted.
Always let others know your plans for hiking (or any) outdoor activity, have a pre-arranged check-in time, (I also leave a note on the vehicle dashboard) water, snacks, sun protectant, rain jacket, cell phone, sketch pad, or, camera, & binoculars.
