This small municipal zoo is a great destination fora family afternoon. The walk through the zoo and surrounding park is quite lovely, especially in the spring with the hundreds of azaleas and rhododendrons are in bloom. There are picnic areas, a skate park, a splash recreation area, and basketball courts. Walking trails with fitness stops connect the zoo to the park and to the small beach at Sunset Lake where one may swim , boat, and fish season permitting.

Was looking for a lunch stop en route to Cape May and found this state park with a beautiful waterfront. This park allows hiking, fishing and swimming with life guards on duty during season. Restrooms and shower rooms are usable but not in very good condition. Parking lot is right across the road. Perfect fit for a quiet stroll after a busy day!

Nice little museum under the Bridgeton Free Public Library. 30,000 pieces of Lenni Lenape history, all found in south Jersey. It was the personal collection of George J. Woodruff until the museum was created in 1976. Mostly made up of arrowheads. Also found in the display cases are pots found by the late Howard Radcliffe who helped assemble the museum. Only open on Wednesdays from 1-4pm. If you are in the area at that time it's worth checking out. FREE

Southwind Vineyard & Winery

Reviewed By 77Tom77 - Hammonton, New Jersey

Southwind Vineyard & Winery is located in Deerfield Township (mailing address is Millville) in Cumberland County, New Jersey. It has been a family horse farm since 1978 and the vineyard was first planted in 2006. It opened to the public in 2012.

According to Wikipedia, Southwind has approximately "4 acres of grapes under cultivation", and produces on average about "800 cases of wine per year. The winery's name reflects the Southern origin of the farm's original owners, and their desire to provide Southern hospitality." The farm also offers horse boarding and hunter pacing.

While the tasting room is relatively small, the abundance of hospitality more than makes up for any perceived lack of space. It is an inviting ambiance reminiscent of a living room in an old house. The only thing missing is a stone fireplace.

There is an outdoor space suitable for larger groups. Beware the overly-friendly dogs however. They can make you forget it's not your own backyard.

Both the staff as well as the other visitors were welcoming and the reason our "stop in" became an all afternoon event. We even called other friends to come and join us.

To my palate, the wines were a little "scattered". However, I did enjoy the chardonnay as well as the merlot. For me, the chardonnay seemed to offer a hint of "gewurztraminer" which works to its benefit. They also make an interesting sparkling white. Debi, the winery manager, acknowledged their incorporation of grape from Chile and Argentina. For me, this is a "plus" as I have yet to find a New Jersey vineyard capable of producing consistent quality wines using home-grown grape exclusively.

So, if you're out for a drive and feeling the need for some good conversation to go with either your white or red, don't miss Southwind. It's truly an afternoon delight.
