Top 8 Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Suceava, Northeast Romania

November 12, 2021 Venice Greaves

In northern Romania near the Ukrainian border and once the capital of Moldova, today Suceava is a city of just over 100,000. Though fairly industrial, the city does have some great historical attractions, like the 14th-century Princely Court fortress and several medieval churches. The Bucovina History Museum is also popular. Best of all, Suceava is the perfect jumping off point for exploring the famous painted monasteries of Bucovina, set amid the gorgeous countryside just outside of the city.

I went to this place because my wife and sister-in-law love painted eggs. I expected just another place with cute eggs. I was blown away. This is real art. I was impressed by the thoroughness of the research the artist has done world over to understand this art. The world perspective is then compressed to the bucovinean world of symbols and expressed flawlessly by the skill of the artist. It was worth every minute spent there.

Witness the traditional way of shaping plates, bowls, vases and pots from ceramics. The ones made in Marginea are special because they end up due to the “cooking” process. Besides the workshop you have a nice restaurant with great Romanian food and a shop for purchasing the black pottery.
