Story Bank

Discover the magic of Mary Poppins at the birthplace of her author, P.L. Travers. Once upon a time a baby girl was born in the upstairs bedroom at the Australian Joint Stock Bank on the corner of Kent and Richmond Streets in Maryborough, Queensland. Her name was Helen Lyndon Goff, but she became known to the world as P.L. Travers, author of the Mary Poppins stories. Visit her heritage-listed birthplace which has been transformed into The Story Bank – a bank that trades in stories. As you cross the threshold, you will enter a world where fantasy and fact intertwine. Tales and yarns, myths and legends, memories and stories – share in their retelling and their creation. The Story Bank has a great story to tell... but most of all, we invite you to come find your own story and add it to our collection.

We visited here recently and we very impressed with the friendly welcome and amount of things there were to see here. Apparently they have something like 11,000 items on display all of which was presented very well. The museum is not huge, but if you like to read everything, you could easily spend a 2-3 hours there. Our children enjoyed the visit and the lady playing the piano was very good.

Excellent historical display. Was a lovely old building. Downstairs had a real olden day smell to it with lovely exposed beams and beautiful old staircase. The exhibits and displays were very interactive and informative. Our kids loved the projector. It was a lovely way to finish our Portside Pass tour with a little tipple of Port. Would definitely recommend . Great value for money.

Brolga Theatre and Convention Centre

Reviewed By NickyP54 - Bargara, Australia

Our first visit to the Brolga Theatre and a thoroughly enjoyable one. A striking building set in attractive grounds overlooking the Mary River and with plenty of onsite parking. A large foyer complete with bar and tea/coffee facilities, plus an outdoor terrace. Our event was 'Rockaria - The ELO Experience' and the show was excellent - very comfortable, spacious seating and good acoustics. Slightly surprised in these new-normal COVID days that there was no social distancing seating, but to be honest, that would have likely proved detrimental to the atmosphere. Hailing from Bundaberg, we can now see why many acts are staged here in preference to the Moncrieff Theatre, as the Brolga, being blunt, puts it to shame.
