Top 8 Things to do Adventurous in Naxos, South Aegean

July 1, 2021 Karren Gelb

A spot of white in the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, the island of Naxos is a unique blend of ancient ruins and beach culture. The largest of the Cycladic Islands, Naxos is the childhood home of none other than Zeus, king of the gods. Upon arrival in Naxos, hike over a causeway to Palatia, where the Portara, a stone gateway to an ancient temple that no longer exists, stands alone, the symbol of the island. At sunset, the views of the island, and the sea beyond, are breathtaking.

Zas Mountain

We started our tour at Agia Marina church, and it was an easy hike. The weather was nice, not too hot, so we barely broke a sweat. The views were amazing, definitely worth it.

Mount Zeus Hike

Reviewed By duhoz - Beroun, Czech Republic

What a rewarding hike to the highest mountain of Cyclades 1004 m. The easiest way is to go to Aria Spring and start the trek No 2 from here. Depends on your fitness level the climb takes 60-90 minutes. The trail is well marked by red dots or follow the stones cairns. The views are stunning and the goats will make you company, they freely roam around. Unfortunately when I reach the summit it was misty and I could not have “Instagram pictures” still I enjoyed the hike. From the summit your can return back or take more difficult northern path. To get to the trail head at Aria Spring take a car and park it there or take a bus and ask to be dropped at the junction towards the spring and walk about 1 km. Refill you water bottle at Aria Spring before and after the hike.

Cave of Zeus

Reviewed By munzerq2015 - Sun Valley, United States

Mountain Zeus sits 1003 meters high and the cave is at 600 meters high or 1950 feet. First the drive to the cave is a bit treacherous narrow without guardrails. You park on the mountain side with just enough room for one car to pass. The hike to the cave is half wonderful with steps and path and the other half is a climb thru the rocks, for sure doable. But it is more than 20 minutes Once you are at the cave it is cool. The cave is huge and very cool. Before and after the climb enjoy the running spring water from a faucet by the steps. We did it.
